United Press reports Commissioner Nordman confirming a 68 cent gasoline price cut across states by Standard Oil of Indiana. The move sparks a probe into past profits and price manipulation. Independents call for Gov McMaster to halt the price war, fearing bankruptcies as price wars sweep the Midwest.
United Press reports gas price turmoil reaches Montana and nearby areas as Standard Oil of Indiana maintains 16.9 cents to 18.9 cents per gallon with tank wagon prices at 14.9 and 17 percent. Independent operators protest but plans to curb prices falter. Minnesota investigates price hikes while North and South Dakota governors push for lower rates. Missouri action also noted. High-level officials vow to curb boosts and urge state price cuts.
The Chicago trading floor of a new paper industries exchange will start tomorrow. John R. Mauff, executive vice president for New York and San Francisco, announced plans to open branch exchanges. He said the move would eliminate waste and expand public service.
Associated Press reports a riot in Aix La Chapelle as crowds attempted to storm the police head quarters to free prisoners after a daytime shortage demonstration. Twelve persons were initially hurt and more than eight wounded. four Germans died and forty were wounded in yesterday's demonstrations. The crowd was largely idle workmen.
Gov. McMaster considers steps to ensure fair gasoline pricing as Standard Oil cuts to about 20 to 26 cents a gallon. A committee seeks agreement among the state, Standard Oil of Indiana, and independents to preserve fair margins and prevent consolidation of control. The governor warned cuts may harm consumers and pledged to use state power to secure available supplies and a fair profit for producers and distributors.
Chicago reports say a Yessarch committee from the wheat council and the U S chamber of commerce dispute overproduction claims and railroad leaders with Omaha merchants will again weigh reducing freight rates for wheat. Wheat rose to 1.01 a bushel, up 5 cents, adding about 50 million dollars in crop value since July 10.
The body of Emil Hanson, a sailor aboard the steamer Henry Steinbrenner, was recovered near the shore at Lake Park yesterday. He was found in a bathing suit, believed to have dived from a raft and struck a rock. The head showed injuries.

A party of 289 tourists aboard the steamer Princess Ena struck submerged rocks in dense fog while crossing from Southampton to St. Malo France. A hole was cut in the hull and passengers were transferred to lifeboats. The vessel later steamed on. Two lifeboats carrying eighty passengers were reported missing at noon with no casualties evident.
Judge Joseph W Woodrough in Brooklyn upheld seizure of British ships outside the three mile limit used to land liquor in the United States. He ruled such vessels midsmuggling acts are liable for seizure even when beyond the coast, if caught in the act and tied to shore contact. The Detroit Fidelity & Security Company bonded the ship Marlon Magher and faced forfeiture concerns.
Alvin N. Owsley national commander of the American Legion will be made a chief of the Chippewa Indians in Superior Wisconsin tomorrow. The ceremony gathers 190 from Coudersy reservation in full regalia with a tribal dance opening the festivities. He will be adopted by the tribe and raised to chief with ceremonial rites and an Indian name.

By Caked Perens. Tarhess France Twenty three lives were given to sparo one here when a motorbus containing thirty tourists bore down on a woman pedestrian. The momentump of the heavy car was such that the driver could not have avoided knocking down the woman. He swerved to avoid her and the car plunged into a ravine two hundred feet below. Twenty three of the passengers were killed. The accident occurred near St. Saye veur.
Governor Pat M Neff of Texas denounces New York restrictions on Prohibition calling for stronger enforcement of the Volstead Act. He labels Gov Al Smith spineless and urges states to enforce federal and constitutional liquor laws, tying the issue to Republican provocations and canal zone liquor traffic.
Philadelphia. Samuel D. Warriner, chairman of the general committee of the anthracite coal operators, says no operators have accepted the federal coal commission’s invitation to attend the parley in New York with miners in Atlantic City, N. J. John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers, has accepted to confer in New York tomorrow with the commission and operators to avert a possible strike starting Sept 1.
President Calvin Coolidge approved 126000000 for next fiscal year. Gen Herbert M. Lord, director of the budget bureau, presented department estimates to the White House. The budget excludes debt interest and post office receipts and counts June 30 start.
At Joaquin Sorreira’s funeral in Valencia Spain a dispute over who carries the coffin led to a scuffle. An artist and deputy Agvat attempted to remove the casket and was struck by Sorreira’s son. After mediation by a royal representative a compromise allowed the coffin to be carried on a sun carriage for part of the route and on shoulders for the rest.
Ned William G. Riler seventeen year old army deserter who had confessed to stealing three automobiles was brought back to Fort Tuay by County Sheriff John Saillax. He had been paroled to the fort’s commanding officer for one year. Riler, son of a Minneapolis Baptist minister, said he had pursued crime for two months.
