Hundreds of Negro youths rioted in Elizabeth and Paterson New Jersey on Wednesday night throwing fire bombs bricks and bottles at police. Eight youths including a woman were arrested in Paterson and state Negroes were taken into custody in Elizabeth as sections of both cities became armed camps.
Communist China said it would conduct large scale military maneuvers in provinces bordering North Vietnam and nationalist China. The Peking Radio broadcast in Japanese linked the exercises to the Gulf of Tonkin crisis and the US air strike on North Vietnam on August 3. The report continued on page 9.
England spon reporters note Bromley firemen rescued 130 trapped persons during the previous year including a man whose hand was caught in a cash register sparking relief and alarm across the county rescue services and public safety efforts highlighted by the incident in Bromley.
President Johnson signed a two year 52 billion federal aid highway program into law praising it for aiding the American motorist. He contrasted federal action with Goldwater’s private state preference, noting one million jobs and reduced road delays. Major allocations include California 60.2 million New York 357.8 million Texas 57.8 million and other large sums. The plan aims to improve primary and secondary highways on a 50 50 funding basis with states and to fund roads on Indian reservations and parkways. The interstate system funding remains separate from this bill.
Washington AP report notes U S District Judge Rabinovitz of Sheboygan Wis faces a setback as Senate Judiciary Committee did not act on his federal judgeship nomination after subcommittee vote to reject. Committee Chairman Eastland planned conference with Rabinovitz, who had Kennedy support but faced adjournment and temporary appointment pending action.
Tom Gaffin, 61, of Soapy Hopwell England said he plans to grow championship potatoes after mixing his wife's laundry soap into his fertilizer.
Reports from Moscow and European monitors claim Andrian Nikolayev and Valentin Popovich stand by for a possible second Soviet space launch. Media note systems for twin automatic satellites in different orbits with one rocket. Stockholm and Swedish monitors report activity on the space launch frequency.
Former President Eisenhower endorsed Goldwater and Miller, praising unity as GOP leaders from 28 states met. Goldwater rejected extremists and warned against extremist groups, while Rockefeller urged the party to bolster the ticket though he would add the Birch Society to the disavowal list. Barry Goldwater accused President Johnson of overstepping by implying authorization of nuclear arms in a North Vietnamese crisis. Secretaries Rusk and McNamara pushed back, saying Goldwater’s interpretation was unjustified and irresponsible. The clash surfaced at Hershey during a unity summit with Republican leaders. West Germany paid homage to 53 people who died trying to cross the Berlin Wall on its third anniversary. Mayor Willy Brandt laid wreaths on wooden crosses as 160 flares lit the night as guards watched in alert. Nearly 20,000 have fled to freedom since the barrier began on Aug. 13 1961. There was no escape news today. An hour of silence followed and Brandt condemned the wall as a symbol of division and breach of human rights.
Washington leaders seek a path forward after a tenuous agreement on districting. Dirksen presses for a constitutional amendment to allow state legislative seats to be apportioned by factors other than population, aiming to delay action while pursuing reform.
