He had been hospitalized three weeks and was on medical leave when death occurred.
Weary relief workers and state police guard against disease and looting after a flood in southwest Louisiana’s rice region left about 30,000 people marooned or homeless. Torrential rain up to 24 inches in 24 hours followed last week’s hurricane near the Louisiana Texas border. Health teams rushed doctors nurses and serum to the flood zone to prevent outbreaks as drinking water was fouled and reports of typhoid and diphtheria emerged. Gov Sam H Jones warned the worst may be ahead as Crowley evacuated and about 3 500 refugees were brought in by railroad flat cars and boats amid a population surge from 10 000 to over 12 000.

Rome reports Italy accuses Greece of aiding British wartime shippers and plotting with Britain along the Albania border. It cites the beheading of Albanian leader Hoggia as Greece’s complicity, with Greek denial and fears of a move to join the Rome Berlin axis.
Neenah reports 21 year old Steve Ferdon of Ricker's Bay dies in a head on crash with 22 year old James Pompa of Appleton on County Trunk P near St John's cemetery. Ferdon had been riding south when Pompa attempted to pass and collided. Both vehicles left the road into a ditch. Ferdon died at Theda Clark Hospital. Pompa and passengers suffered minor injuries. Ferdon had recently recovered from earlier motorcycle injuries suffered July 5.
A fleet of 20 airplanes carrying 35 flyers from the Wisconsin chapter of the National Aeronautics Association landed at Madison municipal airport this morning. They left Racine for the first day of a weeklong statewide good will tour ending in Milwaukee on August 18.
Willkie declares all who bought or sold advertising for the Democratic national committee's 1940 book will be prosecuted under Hatch and corrupt practices acts. A Japanese military spokesman refused to deny reports Japan plans to move troops through French Indo China to strike China. He would not confirm or deny possible advances into Yunnan. He mocked China's offer to defend Indo China, saying Chinese warfare had devolved to retreats and defeats.
London reports say only 55 of 200 Nazi planes reached port as RAF fighters broke up formations over the English Channel and Kent coast. At least 18 or more German planes were shot down, with heavy bombardment and further strikes on Portsmouth Isle of Wight and airfields in France and Germany.
Rome reported Italian troops in British Somaliland had contact with heavy British concentrations as two columns from Ethiopia move toward Bulbar and Berbera. Italian high command gave a brief note of continuing advance and contact with enemy forces amid a stand by British defenses aided by air and sea power.
A massive blaze roared down the Santa Ynez range toward Santa Barbara, destroying 34 summer cabins and engulfing about 2,000 acres. The cause remained undetermined as smoke and ashes blot the city, with no injuries reported.
