A violent rainstorm collapsed three Staten Island tenement buildings killing 19 people, including 12 women and children. Water surged from an overflowing storm sewer tearing through cellars and undermining old brick structures as torrents overwhelmed the hillside.
Mrs. Alice McBreen lies beside her seven day old son in a Staten Island hospital as she learns of the building collapse that killed 18. Her husband Patrolman Joseph McBreen died there heroically while attempting to rescue a child.
A flash flood swelled a six foot stream washing away row after row of collapsing houses as rescue squads watched. At least 19 dead with several missing, four injured, and hero Patrolman Joseph McBreen killed while saving Virginia Budnick in a thunder storm. District Attorney Innes warned of possible grand jury action if negligence is found.
Miss Miley of Cincinnati becomes the first woman to win the western roll derby three years in a row with a 209 total after four rounds. Patty Berg of Minneapolis finishes two behind as Jameson of San Antonio edges Barrett of Minneapolis for third by one stroke.
Baghdad reports say Iraq defense minister Maj. Gen Bekr Sidki Pasha and air force chief Col Mohamed Ali Jawad were assassinated at Mosul airport at sunset. A soldier fired many bullets. Jawad died saving Sidki. Sidki headed to Turkey for war games. Mosul lies 220 miles northwest of Baghdad. Washington reports Congress adjournment remains blocked over wages hours and crop loans, with little progress in the House and Senate.
The Danish freighter Maine sank at 7:49 a m after collision with the Canadian Pacific steamer Duchess of Atholl which stood by. Atholl rescued 23 Maine crew, towed her in fog east southeast of Boston. About 900 Atholl passengers aboard none injured.
The Hambletonian for 12 three year olds in Goshen was postponed as the track dried out with the start moved to 3 p m central standard time.

A Spanish government vessel of about 6100 tons was torpedoed and sunk off Sape Bon near Tunis, with 12 of 40 crew lost. The nearby British steamer Dido rescued three crew members as the sinking vessel, Campeador of Santander, carried benzine. The Dido reported the fire raged as the attack occurred and the wreck lies in about GO miles from port.

Cincinnati authorities charged 31 year old Anna Filser Hahn with murder and grand larceny in the deaths of four elderly men. Investigators noted possible estate theft and attempted collections from two victims while reviewing four mysterious illnesses connected to the case. Autopsy tests were conducted and authorities pursued links to a death in Colorado Springs and a pawnshop recovery of diamond rings linked to Hahn.
Edith Wharton, famed novelist of the Mauve Decade and author of The House of Mirth Ethan Frome and The Age of Innocence, died after a prolific career spanning The Valley of Decision and later works. Born Edith Newbold Jones in New York on January 24 1862 she married Edward Wharton at 22 and lived between Europe and the United States. Her 1920 novel The Sign of Innocence won the Pulitzer Prize.
The Chinese central government declares no choice but to resist Japanese aggression in Shanghai where 5 000 to 8 000 Japanese sailors occupy battle positions near the international settlement. U S Marines Russia Britain France and a Russian volunteer unit mobilize as Chinese troops pour into the city, amid failed peace talks and growing danger of a broader clash.
The committee voted down a recommendation for a congressional inquiry into the Democratic National Committee's sale of $250 autographed yearbooks by President Roosevelt. Republican Snell argued the sales violate campaign finance laws and called for action, while Chairman O’Connor said no action was taken and most Republicans backed tabling the resolution on party lines.

Prairie du Chien Wis authorities probing the Mildred Best slaying learned Orla Shaw Mildred’s uncle probably died of poisoning in Richland Center hospital two weeks after the child was found shot. State toxicologist reported a large amount of poison in Shaw’s body sparking exhumation and new inquiries by Crawford county officials.
Washington reported President Roosevelt nominated Hugo L. Black of Alabama to the Supreme Court to fill the Willis Van Devanter seat. Confirmation was blocked by Senators Burke and Johnson, in a secrecy noted move that caused a major stir in the capital.
Washington reports Senator Black of Alabama, a Democrat, said he learned of his Supreme Court nomination only hours before its Senate referral. He called it a great honor and a wonderful opportunity to serve, expressing happiness at being selected by the president.
Senate debate over Black’s nomination drew hearty labor endorsements from John L. Lewis of the C I O and William Green of the AFL, while Republican Senator Bridges and Georgia Representative Cox led opposition. Attorneys general discussed legal questions on qualification and future disqualification, as Ashurst pressed for prompt approval amid procedural objections.
Dearborn police confirmed a small cache of dynamite found yesterday in a tunnel near the Ford factory power plant at River Rouge. Ford officials had no comment. One report said the quantity could cripple the power lines and steampipe system of the vast factory.
