Gov. Walter J. Kohler opened Wisconsin's Republican campaign for renomination urging reform through practical governance. He defended budget reform, a modern budget director, a unified annuity and investment board, and civil service expansion as essential steps for efficient state government and better public services.
The state conservation commission blamed berry pickers for most wildfires amid a terrible fire season in Wisconsin. Officials cited light snow, drought and heat, with 1,030 workers mobilized in upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin to combat multiple blazes. Seven Langlade fires were contained after weekend strain on crews. A fair week was canceled and equipment moved to fire zones.

Murphysboro is the scene as 23 year old flyer Paul Montgomery is held for Kentucky authorities after being arrested in connection with an airplane bombing of nonunion coal mining fields near Providence Kentucky. Sheriff Flanigan noted no formal charge yet. Montgomery admitted his yellow and black Barling mono plane was airborne around the bombing time.
