Washington August 10 The treaty to buy the Danish West Indies for 25 million dollars is before the Senate foreign relations committee and may be acted on early next week. Senator Stone says ratification is likely this session. Republicans say price 25.6 million is high but necessary to secure the islands.
Washington reports announce that Germany will publish its last note on the Lusitania in six months, with Germany's consent. The note says the killing of Americans was unintentional and expresses regret, pledging noncombatants and neutrals must not suffer, and calls reprisal against non-enemy subjects a mistake.
Gil Thekman of Plainview Minnesota was elected president of the Minnesota Retail Clothiers association at their seventh annual convention. J. Anderson of Kendy and J. H. Shock of Red Wing as vice presidents, George M. Peterson of Duluth as secretary, with A. K. Squier T. H. Well and H. Fisher as executive committee members. Progressive candidate William H. Hatton denounces Wisconsin’s administration for failing to reduce taxes and for overcharging on fire insurance. Allied counteractions report repulsed assaults on the Somme and Meuse fronts with minor aerial exchanges and captures of British officers and men.
