At Geneva U P reports James Lone of Oak Ridge says US nuclear plants will generate power cheaply by 1975 with eggs frying on the breakfast stove. He predicts electricity costs comparable to coal oil or hydro within 15 to 20 years.
Eleven American airmen released by Red China after over two years in prison spent their last afternoon in Tokyo as they wished. Five toured the city and bought gifts while the rest relaxed in quarters. They depart Tachikawa at 1 p.m. Wednesday for Travis Air Force Base via Midway and Hickam, with no family reunions planned at Travis.
Witnesses testified Sgt James C Gallagher mistreated two American POWs at Camp No 5 Pyongtong North Korea in February 1931 and cast them into the sub zero cold like sacks. Col John William Jones and Cpl Donald Thomas Baxter were named victims. The testimony described dragging dying men to the barracks door as 40 degrees below zero night air spread fear.
Polio figures show Wisconsin cases doubled in the first seven months of 1955 as nationwide polio declines persisted. A 28 year old Oshkosh housewife, Mrs William H Mueller, is hospitalized with a mild non paralytic polio case at Mercy Hospital. She is recovering as three Mueller children received gamma globulin. The outbreak in Winnebago County centers on Neenah Menasha near Outagamie County.
Eighteen month old Betty Ann Price died in a crib fire in Milwaukee while four siblings escaped. A 5 year old cousin reportedly touched a gas stove string that ignited bedding. Deputy fire marshal William Rossiter noted gatekeepers were away. Damage was about $2,500 and the Red Cross offered aid.
Map shows Connie, the season’s third and largest hurricane, about 450 miles off the Florida coast traveling northwest to north at 70 miles per hour with winds of 135 miles per hour. Residents from Jackson north to Cape Hatteras are alerted.
The Miami Weather Bureau reported Hurricane Connie with 133 mph winds about 450 miles east of Jacksonville and heading northwest along the Florida Georgia coast. Coastal communities from North Carolina to Virginia prepared as flags flew and warnings of 73 mph winds spread, while high tides lashed beaches from Atlantic Beach to Cape Hatteras.
Hundreds of Koreans surged across a causeway to attack the U S Army compound on Wolmi Do Island seeking to kidnap neutral national inspection team members. Seven Americans were injured as tear gas and carbine fire repelled the mob amid renewed anti Communist protests.
Polk County Auditor Harold Anderson reported a notable tax matter from Des Moines where a resident sent in a ten dollar gold certificate long out of circulation for 22 years. The certificate was received as payment amid a stretched bar relay in local records.
Edwards AFB Calif a research pilot Joseph A Walker 34 saved himself and seven crewmen when the X-1A rocket plane exploded in the bomber during a test over the desert nearly six miles up Walker cut off switches and dumped fuel to prevent a larger blast before being pulled to safety by the bomber crew. Major Arthur Murray Maj Charles Yeager noted records and warned fuel remaining in the rocket plane.
Oshkosh Vocational School board adopts a 1936 budget of 165201.32 for operation, noting anticipated revenue will reduce city tax levy in 1956. The meeting approves purchasing 72 shades, grants a $10 raise to secretary-stenographer Lucille Bork, and plans to hire a public relations speaker. James Youngworth resigns to join Hughes Aircraft. calendar and bills are approved.
Bert T. Combs and administration backers conceded the Democratic gubernatorial nomination to former Baseball Commissioner Hap Chandler as vote tabulation showed Chandler leading by about 19 thousand with 3,324 of 4,165 precincts reported. Chandler celebrated at Louisville headquarters while Combs urged party unity.
