Butte des Morts Centennial Opens Today
Crowds gather for the centennial celebration of the village of Butte des Morts with a weekend program. A bronze marker will be unveiled at 2:30 p.m. Sunday after a historical parade and a series of events led by Winnebago County Archaeological and Historical Society. The program features Queen Pearl Flaherty, a parade lineup including Indian band, Oshkosh and Winneconne bands, and a Sunday baseball game between Butte des Morts and Winneconne at 10 a.m. with a full schedule of free acts and a pavement dance to close.

Navy authorizes seaplanes to aid Isle Royale forest fire
Admiral William H Standley acting secretary of the navy authorized use of naval seaplanes to support the national park service battling the Isle Royale fire in Michigan. He telegrammed Rear Admiral John Downes to send as many planes as needed, at Ickes request. Earlier reports said 700 men fought the fire as 2,900 workers struggled to stop flames that crossed from Canada into the Superior national forest, after a shift in wind.
