A Thor Able rocket launched from Cape Canaveral carried a 142 pound paddlewheel satellite to a highly elliptical orbit aimed at 22 000 miles out and 16 miles high. The explorer VI mission includes a flying laboratory to study space mysteries and power from solar paddles to energize transmitters.
The Space Administration announced that Explorer VI remains in orbit and will stay aloft for more than a year.
In Washington officials announced it will be hours before it can be determined whether the orbiter achieved orbit. The spheroid satellite, 23 inches in diameter and 2 inches long, housed fifteen major experimental devices to study the earth’s radiation belts. The mission aims to improve safety for manned space travel, with the craft named a pad.
President Ho Chi Minh of North Vietnam traveled through China possibly to confer with Meo Tse-tung on action against Laos. Reports say bands of tribesmen attacked Laotian posts last week though Laotian forces claimed to have retaken all border posts.
President Eisenhower criticized a self financing TVA bill saying it would divorce construction plans from executive review. He noted rapid passage despite objections and outlined a bond authorization of 750 million to address a looming three year power shortage while shielding TVA expansion from broader private power limits. The bill also requires TVA to repay roughly one billion dollars to the federal treasury over 53 years with interest.
Washington reports say President Eisenhower remains in good physical and mental shape for upcoming talks with world leaders including a European swing and a meeting with Soviet Premier Khrushchev. He plans Gettysburg vacations with short returns for key appointments. Close associates note improved mood and enthusiasm as he engages in history making events.
In Lincoln Nebraska the FBI joined a seven state manhunt for Harlan Lamm Noble 47 an escapee from a Kansas criminal insane ward charged with abducting beating and sexually assaulting a six year old girl. The child underwent surgery and was reported in fairly good condition as federal prosecutors filed unlawful flight charges in Omaha.
Defense Secretary McElroy said it could be constructive for Khrushchev to view some American bases during his visit next month. He noted the premier had not wished to see bases, but suggested he might change his mind. The ambassador echoed the premier’s usual stance.
Washington Public Health Service released figures showing 183 paralytic polio cases for the week ending Aug 1, a new yearly high. The year to date total reached 1,316 paralytic cases, with 89 nonparalytic and 40 unspecified type cases. 2,050 polio cases across all types in the first 30 weeks, up from 1,162 in the same period last year.
Kyrlo Czupirczuk, a 31 year old Ukrainian ex mental patient, fired from a shotgun and automatic pistol into an uptown Philadelphia home for the aged wounding five and killing two. He shouted that Communists and Bolsheviks seek to kill him claiming a persecution complex inspired the attack. His wife said he talked of threats and a Chicago killer to target his second floor apartment near the home.
SUPPLEMENT GARDEN CITY Alabama UPD Police Chief Earnest Johnson was dismissed after confessing he posed as a highway patrolman in his spare time. He admitted firing motorists to supplement his city income.
Washington UPI The Appropriations Committee trimmed President Eisen hower’s military construction request citing piecemeal planning and lack of coordination. The bill totals 1 285 012 700 dollars a reduction of 276 187 500 or about one percent from the request. The committee urges better planning and enforcement to eliminate unnecessary projects and coordinate the services.
The carrier Ranger was awarded the Adm. James H. Flatley Memorial Award for Aviation Safety by Adm. Herbert G. Hepwood. He noted Ranger had only six minor shipboard mishaps in the past year. The plaque honors Vice Admiral Flatley, an early Naval air hero and aviation safety advocate.
A dynamite truck exploded beside a burning building in Roseburg causing extensive fire and damage across six blocks. At least eight killed and fifty two injured. hospitalized victims flown from Grants Pass. The blast damaged warehouses shops and residences as debris scattered through the heart of the business district. The Umpqua Hotel guests and staff were evacuated and the National Guard was called to prevent looting.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to pass a strong labor reform law to end racketeering in labor management. He labeled the Senate bill ineffective and backed House substitutes while AFL CIO leader Meany criticized the approach as anti union. The debate divided Republicans and Democrats over how to curb coercive picketing and secondary boycotts while preserving democratic union rights.
Madison reports a settlement of 8774 to former Superior State College professor George Ball. The board paid him for resignation after firing on June 3, 1857 and Ball agreed his retirement date. Ball had challenged the discharge through courts with prior appeals and hearings.
In New York Democrats sign on as co sponsors of a Senate resolution urging President Eisenhower to set a two day deadline for voluntary settlement of the steel strike and to appoint a three member fact finding panel if no agreement is reached. Union and industry negotiators enter another day of talks as ads clash over profits and wages highlighting a tense standoff.
Judge F Ryan Duffy of Milwaukee resigned as chief judge of the U S Court of Appeals in compliance with a new law banning 70 year olds from top administrative posts. John S Westings a 62 year old Washington Indiana jurist was selected as successor.
