US Jets Rushed to Saigon in Tonkin Crisis

Six U S Air Force F 102 jets from the 16th Fighter Interceptor Squadron rushed to Saigon from Clark Field in the Philippines on a 24 hour alert to defend South Vietnam amid Gulf of Tonkin tensions. Lt Col Garnett D Page said the fighters carried only antiaircraft rockets and had no offensive weapons. The move marks the first time combat jets were stationed in Saigon as North Vietnam acknowledged and warned against American actions. SEATO met in Bangkok to discuss regional defense as US forces reportedly go on heightened alert.
