Reports from Ardmore and Francis detail clashes with a draft resister band and arson on bridges in Tyrola and Salt Creek. Washington considers sending federal troops if state authorities cannot control anti draft demonstrations, with Justice and War departments coordinating actions.
Special to The Northwestern from Madison dated August 4 reports Adjutant General Molway explains Wisconsin may form a state guard equal in size to forces called into federal service. Fifty six companies across three regiments will be organized, with about 1,300 old Springfield rifles available though not modern. Local guard powers are limited to civil peace duties, while only deputized guards may arrest or detain nonmilitary offenders.
More than 8,000 young men called by draft boards marched through Chicago with military bands and cheers. Provisional camp units 4000 strong led the parade, featuring Illinois Wisconsin and Michigan troops headed from Fort Sheridan. Major General Thomas H. Barry reviewed the event alongside the Russian commission and preparedness conference members.
Four army signal corps officers completed a 226 mile balloon flight from Fort Omaha to a farm four miles south of Waseca Minnesota in six hours. The uninjured craft landed safely after a moonlit, high altitude trip with favorable winds. Names listed include Camain Kennedy Captain Pagelow Lieutenant Davilleon and Sergeant MecCullogh.

In Philadelphia on August 4, customs officials informed the Norwegian ship Terrier’s crew that red white and blue mattress coverings used as bank coverings on the vessel are not welcomed in America. Workmen at a shipyard complained about the national colors being used for the ship’s ticking.
Stevens Point resident Wie An drew fh Weate of the Inkp Week Lumber company and First National Bank died yesterday in Los Angeles California. He was a bachelor aged sixty. The body will be shipped to Stevens Point for burial.
Ada Oklahoma August 41 Organized anti draft rioting in southeastern Oklahoma was ended as posse members from six counties returned home after no organized resistance. Local authorities swiftly organized rounds up and the mob began to scatter. Over forty arrests have been made and leaders Mitchel Cudjo Edward Caroling and George Cannon are held on treason charges by federal authorities.
About 200 workers were trapped at West Kentucky Coal Co mine No 7 after a blast at 7 40 am. A noon count put entombed at about 175 with 46 rescued and four bodies removed including mine foreman Charles Wallace. Fire and black damp hindered rescue efforts until a mine rescue car arrived from Evansville.
A string of Highland power plants in southwestern Wisconsin and northwestern towns including Vancaster Rosenbel Fennimore and Platteville were bought by the Mid Continental Utilities Company of Chicago. The acquisition includes the McGregor Light and Power Company and plans transmission lines extended from Platteville to Prairie du Chien then across the Mississippi to McGregor and onward through Monona Postville and Owatonna.

United Press reports five armed guards of the Amperi mA tanker Motann were killed when torpedoed by a German submarine. Eight guards are missing and considered loot. The vessel sank within minutes, according to state department advisories.
