Reports from St Petersburg and Moscow describe a premature explosion of bombs during a troop detachment move against strikers in Moscow. The blast killed about thirty workers. soldiers remained unharmed as strikes widen and mutinous activity spreads.
Berlin Aug 4 It is understood that H Percival Dodge secretary of the American embassy here has been transferred to the position of first aide of the American embassy at Tokyo.
William J. Bryan visited the International Exposition in Milan today and plans to leave for Venice that evening after meeting Ambassador White. The trip underscores his diplomatic and civic engagements during the Italian tour in early August.
Pasquale Greco, 35, reported kidnapped by a black hand gang, was found in a hallway on Eleventh Street gagged, blindfolded, and tied after eighty hours in captivity. Tailor Eugenie Duche notified police and was arrested then discharged on complicity charges.
Henry C Barlow prominent half way man and former president of the Evansville and Terre Haute railway was summoned to appear before a grand jury. The jury will begin an investigation next Monday into Standard Oil company relations with railways centered in Chicago. Also summoned were F H Austin and John J Duck, rail executives. Barlow’s prior roles included traffic manager of the Wisconsin Central railway. Authorities expect his knowledge of oil transportation on the two roads to aid the government inquiry.
Milwaukee youths Joseph Klatt aged fifteen and Stanthaus Wargin thirteen fought a preconcerted knife duel in a vacant lot after a quarrel over a card game. Wargin was lightly stabbed in the right shoulder and treated. Klatt, who did not carry a knife, fled and was later arrested for assault and battery. The case goes to the juvenile court.
About 500 U S soldiers from the department of the lakes assemble in formation to defend their camp in the first general maneuver of the camp of instruction. Brigadier General Carter and staff observe as Michigan National Guard units arrive to augment the camp, bringing total troops to roughly 6 60. Commanded by Brig Gen Charles W Harray the force rests after entering via Day's crossing owed to good health.
New Orleans August 4 The steamer Whitehall from Colon was declared a menace to port health and ordered held indefinitely at the Mississippi river quarantine station. The ship carried Chagres fever with one death today among twenty one crew and sixteen hospitalized.
