Miners Hear Drilling Sound From Rescue Shaft

Manasha Man Paralyzed After Lake Diving Mishap

Fire at Walter Beier farm destroys barn and stock

A rural Ripon blaze on Rush Lake Road caused over 50000 in damage to the Walter Beier farm. A barn hog shed granary hay feeder grain and livestock were lost while the family home and smaller buildings were saved. Fire officials battled the flames until late night with aid from Berlin and local volunteers.

Destroyer Maddox Repels Vietnamese PT Boat Attack

In the Gulf of Tonkin the destroyer Maddox withstood an attack by three North Vietnamese PT boats. The ships fired torpedoes and 37mm rounds, then fled as Maddox and supporting aircraft returned fire. No casualties were reported aboard Maddox, while two PT boats limped away and a third was halted. Tonkin Area Forces Hiked

Washington AP reports President Johnson ordered US naval forces in the Tonkin Gulf area to destroy any force that attacks them after three North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats attacked the U S destroyer Maddox. Commanders in the area were told to attack any attacking force in international waters with the aim of driving off and repelling the threat.

The State Department announced a formal protest to the North Vietnamese government over an unprovoked attack on the U S Navy destroyer Maddox in international waters. President Johnson ordered continued Gulf of Tonkin patrols and deployment of an extra destroyer to bolster defense.

Rural Neenah Man Dies in Car Crash

Kenneth Hugh Zastrow 21 of Neenah died instantly when his auto crossed into the eastbound lane on County Trunk BB near the Winnebago Outagamie line about 12 50 this morning. Four occupants of the other car were injured and taken to St Elizabeths Hospital with satisfactory condition reported for all. Zastrow born June 6 192? in Appleton is survived by parents three sisters and five brothers. Funeral 2 pm Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran in the Town of Greenville.
