Aug 1 dispatch reports Lodz inmiddle of a labor strike turned violent as police clashed with unions. Army mobilized after clashes, at least thirty killed or wounded, stores closed, electric system shut down, workers used streetcars as barricades, and ambulances ferried the dead. German subject among the dead.
Oklahoma Republicans and Indiana Territory delegates meet in Tulsa to draft a platform for the proposed new state of Oklahoma. They plan to choose a state central committee chair and discuss endorsing the constitution for referendum in September.
In a convention in Oklahoma, delegates send loyal greetings to President Roosevelt and endorse his square deal policy. Ralph Campbell of McAlester is named temporary chairman by acclamation as Frantz forces win the first test of strength.
New York authorities linked a recent string of brutal killings of women and children to a found body of eight year old Katie Dritschler. She was strangled with a hair ribbon and cleaned evidence pointed to a maniac at large. Cobbler Gaetano Rippolone was detained for questioning as investigators searched his shop and alibi.
Edmund R. Watson president of Northern National Bank and treasurer of Henry Hess Brewing died in a pool accident at the Columbia club Philadelphia. He slipped on the springboard, struck his head on the pool coping, and sank. Janitor retrieved him unconscious. he died at a hospital as coroner’s office investigates. Watson about fifty. wife and daughter at Belmar, N J.
Madison August 1. The state railway commission ordered sweeping reductions in hard coal rates between Superior and Eau Claire and intermediate points on the Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha line. Old Superior Eau Claire hard coal rate 1.85. soft coal 1. The new rates cut hard coal to 1.40 and soft coal to 1.00. The action follows a complaint by Eau Claire senator J H Noble and Superior board of trade.
A Wheen xin special from Waupaca reports Milwaukee officials will stop half fare on all missions after August 15. Inmates at the veterans home who hold a commandant certified certificate will no longer receive the reduced fare when traveling away from the home.
A Wisconsin special from Burlington reports Lucius Whitman, aged eighty plus, and his son traveling from Ohio to Racine County this morning. He is the eldest elder in the county, helped by his widow and children who remain in Ohio.
Tryon Hall, the $500000 residence of C K G Billings at Fort Washington road and 19th street, rises as a country style city villa on Manhattan island. Architect Guy Dowell designed the Louis XIV style three story house with a five story tower. The estate includes a grand hall inlaid with Sienna marble, a central court, European paneling, a pipe organ, and a waters fountain. Billings plans to spend half each year at Tryon Hall, while maintaining a Fifth Avenue home.
A dispatch from Seoul says forty Coreans were killed or wounded today as Japanese troops surrounded Corean barracks following the imperial proclamation disbanding the Corean army of about seven thousand. Two thousand Seoul garrison troops will be disarmed today, with machine gun guards at exits. The disbanded soldiers receive yearly peace, while the emperor's bodyguard remains intact. Delegates from Corea planned to appeal to the United States to halt further Japanese domination.
Santa Fe passenger train No. 614 derailed near Ret Rock Oklahoma today. Engineer Mack of Arkansas City and his fireman were killed and several passengers seriously injured. A coach, chair car, and baggage car were wrecked, the wreck lies several miles from the station with few details available.
A gift from a former class plus additional donations from friends of the college bolster the library endowment. The Andrew Carnegie endowment last year and other gifts support thirteen volumes for the dietary department and aid the historical department of the Merary.
Funeral services for Henry Huntington were held in Versailles as members of the American colony gathered. He cited personal reasons including business and family ties here, noting twenty three years at Grand Rapids and his wife’s wishes. Governor Davidsen’s choice process will continue with other candidates.
Martin W. Littleton, former president of Brooklyn, named chief counsel for Barry Thaw in the upcoming trial for Stanford White’s murder. Littleton, a noted orator, will replace D. M. Delmas and reportedly receive a $25,000 fee. He previously spoke nominating Alton B. Parker at the St Louis Democratic convention.
Oshkosh W. C. T. U. plans Friday afternoon meeting at 3222 Ninth Street with Mrs. Knapp. A basket picnic follows. The group has designated superintendents for war work in areas such as temperance education and social purity, with several members named to lead specific departments. In probate court Wednesday the petition of Mire Jemeia Crassford Hintian for appointment of a special administrator of the estate of her late father John Ho Crawford was denied. The ruling affects the handling of estate matters and guardianship procedures.
Mrs John Stanford, a Vinland resident, died at eleven o clock Wednesday evening at age seventy nine. She is survived by sons George, Harry, and John Stanford and daughters Mrs Mary Miracle and Miss Elizabeth Stanford, all of Vinland. Funeral Sunday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah. Burial arrangements and estate matters discussed by local officials earlier.
The State of Tlinois has appointed Mr Crane ford of Hillsboro NL as temporary administrator of the estate. No special administrator is needed. Mrs Hinman challenged probate of her father’s will, with a contest set for August 14. Amber Crawford, widow, is represented by Bouck & Hilton. Hinman by Williams & Williams.
Twenty three Trekes claim wins in three Newport class races on Lake Butte des Morts Wednesday afternoon. Virginia boat challenged Twenty-three in the windward leg but finished behind, while Clhosa repeated second in all events with handicapped sailing.
The funeral for Patrick Lennon was held this morning at 8 30 from his 381 Division Street residence and at 9 from St Peter's Catholic church. The G A R post of which he was a member led services and a large delegation marched to the church. Interment followed at Riverside cemetery with pallbearers named. Out of town relatives attended from Milwaukee Waupun Iron Mountain and Escanaba. Richard C Kriesel funeral set for Friday at 2 from 321 Seventh Street with barbers union pallbearers. Kriesel age 27 survived by parents a sister wife and four children.
The Oshkoah board of review concluded with few changes to assessor fixed values. Reductions were granted only when property owners testified under oath to proven claims. Several major firms remained at assessments, while banks and other large personal property lines largely stayed as originally fixed.
