In Washington on April 23 the House granted unanimous consent to set aside May 1 and 2 to consider the Nicaragua canal bill. The Post Office appropriation bill was taken up with a plan to close general debate and devote two hours to contested items special mail facilities and pneumatic tube service and one hour to the railway postal clerks provision. Mr Loud of California, chairman of the Post Office Committee, explained the provisions of the bill which carries 113,934,800.
Noland P Hill, former Puget Sound University professor, was arrested on bigamy charges. He will contest extradition and seek release on habeas corpus. Sheriff Mencke from Blair says Hill’s wife there pressed the charge. extradition papers awaited Governor Rogers’ return to Olympia.
Tuesday's common council meeting may confirm Alderman Meentgren's resignation due to ward removal. Limited candidate chatter exists with M. Goettman and John L Neumann as potential successors, both former aldermen who are not actively campaigning.

Joliet Illinois April 4 operations were suspended today at the Illinois Steel company plant in Joliet. Between 500 and 700 men were thrown out of employment. Rumors said the entire plant controlled by Federal Steel company would soon close, but no official confirmation was given. Chicago Illinois April 5 President Eugene J Buffington of Illinois Steel stated the shutdown of three mills was only for repairs and temporary, with restart planned promptly once repairs finished.
President and Mrs McKinley arrive in Washington from New York and begin a busy morning in the White House reviewing accumulated bills. General Corbin, William Hawkes, and George Barber join the party in New York and later travel with them to Canton to inspect home repairs before returning to Washington.

Rev J Alvin Clark of Neenah will serve as pastor for both St John s Universalist Oshkosh and the Church of the Good Shepherd Neenah, preaching Sunday mornings in Oshkosh and two days a week in Neenah while preaching Sunday evenings in Neenah. The agreement, announced by St John s and pending society vote, awaits final action at a Wednesday meeting.
George W. Abbey of Fond du Lac and Regine B. Levy of this city announce their approaching marriage. The bride is the daughter of Marty Levy of 35 Waugoo Street and has worked for the Wisconsin Telephone and Northwestern companies. The groom is a young Fond du Lac businessman in the grocery trade. After the wedding they will travel to Fond du Lac to reside.
Washington April 23 A Senate committee report on Montana senator William A Clark finds his election void due to briberies and corrupt acts by his agents and violations of Montana election law. The report urges the Senate to seat no one and to act promptly to restore Montana’s reputation, noting Republican support for Clark amid a deadlock and indicating several key votes were corruptly obtained.
Senator Chandler submitted a committee report unsigned while a minority dissented on certain features. The views of the minority will be submitted later, and Senator Clark refused to comment at this time.
Washington April 23 The Quay case dominated the Senate as a vote loomed. Senator Quarles Republican of Wisconsin argued against seating Mr Quay, warning of dangerous precedent and challenging the governor’s appointment as unconstitutional and possibly illegal under Pennsylvania law. He urged Congress to define election timing and vacancy procedures to curb executive overreach.

Mr and Mrs Louis Othrow returned from New London after learning that their son Frank Othrowy a brakeman on the Northwestern road was badly injured Thursday He was setting a brake when a car bore down and he was thrown between cars He curled into a ball to minimize injuries and was dragged several car lengths to stop A portion of his hand and a hole in the palm were noted His head was cut and his left shoulder and arm were badly lacerated Mrs Othrow learned of the injury Friday and visited him Saturday He had been injured in a railway accident a year prior He is married and has one child
The funeral of Mrs Christina Tensler was held Saturday at her Myrtle Street residence. Rev. George D. Lindsay presided before a large gathering. The German native, aged seventy, came to America at twenty and left three sons Edward, Robert, and George. Their father died twenty years ago. The sons work in Ashland, Jeffries, and Minneapolis. Neighbors expressed sympathy and support.
