Orono Field Day Winners In Blues White Victory
The Orono Continuation School held its annual Field Day on Friday September 24 with Blues led by Carol Staples and Neil Moffat defeating the Whites led by Margaret McKinnon and Carman Cornish. Senior Intermediate and Junior divisions crowned champions in pole vault high jump and running events with Murray Patterson and Carol Staples among top victors. The Blues won the half mile relay and the meet finished with a wide array of prize winners across boys and girls events.

Canada’s Prime Minister rules out immediate federal election
At a Ottawa dinner on September 27 Premier King said no federal election will occur until after the war in Europe is won. If Europe’s victory runs late beyond 1945 he would seek a second wartime appeal, but he warned against obstructing war policies and said he could dissolve parliament if needed. He ruled out a quick general Dominion vote and indicated dissolution only if a large portion opposes major war measures.

Great Need For Child Welfare In Counties
The 21st Annual Conference of the Woman's Auxiliary to the M.SJC.C. for the Deanery of Durham and Northumberland met at St. John's Parish Hall in Port Hope on September 21. A Holy Communion service was led by Rev J. M. Crisall with 97 communicants. Bishop A. L. Fleming of the Arctic preached on feeding the hungry, urging aiding both body and spirit. After lunch and a 1.45 pm business session, 118 attended from 275 members, plus many visitors. Reports praised missionary work. Mrs. Crosthwait highlighted child welfare needs in both countries.

Tire retreading allowed for passenger cars announces minister
Hon. C. D. Howe, minister of munitions, says all passenger car owners may now have tires retreaded without a tire ration permit. The policy does not change rules for selling new tires to essential passenger cars. Applicants must certify tires or tubes are completely unusable and cannot be repaired.
Toronto men face robbery charges in Cobourg court
Norman Spence Henry Peterson and Gerald Gouldby of Toronto appeared in Cobourg Police Court on September 23 charged with theft of about $3000. The Crown dropped robbery charges after key witnesses failed to identify the accused or the bills. James Baxton of the Canadian Bank of Commerce testified five two dollar bills tied to the case were presented to settle a phone bill, linked to a Morris Steinberg car deal with HA Jackson as buyer. The witnesses could not identify the bills, and Morris Steinberg said the money came from two youths. Crown counsel then offered no further evidence.

Peterborough remembers Oscar W. Scott of 81 Crescent Street who died after a short illness at age 91. A former Orono undertaker and Bowmanville factory worker, he leaves two sons Cecil and Wilbert, a daughter Mrs. W. K. Sloane, and grandchildren Kenneth Oscar Sloane Russell Wilson and Russell Best. Funeral at Orono United Church with interment in Orono Cemetery.
