Bowmanville Orono Combines Form New Hockey Team

The Orono Orphans disband and join with Bowmanville to form the Bowmanville Orawd Combines in the Lakeshore league with home ice at Bowmanville Arena. Officials named include President G H E Mann and Co managers Hesper Dean and Frank Jamieson. First practice set for October 1 at 6 p.m. in Bowmanville.

Mrs. Fred Tamblyn Celebrated With Surprise Birthday Party

Mrs Ada Cryderman Tamblyn marked her 75th birthday with a surprise reception at home after a family wedding. Grandchildren Sharon Tamblyn Larry and Wayne Miller hosted, guests arrived from Peterboro Toronto Oshawa Hampton Newcastle Enniskillen Bowmanville and Orono. A birthday cake florist blooms and gifts created a festive scene with tea served by relatives. Carlos Tamblyn also shared the birthday date.

Durham Clubs at Lindsay Fair Swine and Calf Show Sparkled

At the Lindsay Fair on September 19 a district 4 H Swine and Calf Club Show drew many spectators. Durham County entries included Senior Shorthorn and Holstein calves, West Durham and Hast Swine Club gilts, and a trophy for Durham’s best three beef calves. Garry Beckett’s gilt won champion with Clarke Stephen from Northumberland as reserve.

The Clarke Township teachers held a September 17, 1956 meeting at Starkville School with hostesses Miss Stewart Mrs Elliott and Mrs Martin. Guest speaker and new inspector Mr C A Holmes led officer elections and shared plans for October at the Teachers' Convention in Cornwall and the St Lawrence River projects. The group announced a Public Speaking Contest November 2 and set next meeting at Antioch School led by Mrs MacKenzie Mrs Moffat and Mr Collins.

W C T U Meeting in Tucson with Hymns and Devotion

The September W C T U meeting in Tucson opened with hymns and a devotion on Gods care from the 23rd Psalm. A Silver Medal Contest was planned for November and readings included poems by Edna Jacques. Stella Carson sang Higher Ground and a clip sheet on Highway Accidents was shared.

Arthur Mercer visits Guelph grandparents in Kendal

Arthur Mercer from Guelph spent time with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Fred Warren. He worked with a Sydney Nova Scotia firm during summer and will return to McGill University Montreal for his final year. Mrs L Thorne and Mrs Alva Swarbrick hosted rides to Oshawa and a chicken dinner with Mr and Mrs Lloyd Ferguson. A corn roast and dance at the home of Mr and Mrs led by Fish and Hunt Club drew about forty attendees.

O H S Compete in Police Games Third Out Of Thirty Schools

More than 350 contestants from thirty elementary and secondary schools joined the eighth annual Ontario Junior Police Games. O.H.S. Boys Track and Field placed third with 68 points, behind Whitby District High and Bowmanville Training School. Eric Carleton and Donald Lycett won events and the team took second in the Medley Relay.

Elaine Powell Killed Leaving School Bus Near Newtonville

Elaine Powell a 15 year old Orono High School student from the Newtonville area was killed after leaving a school bus two miles west of Newtonville in Clarke township. She walked into the path of a southbound car driven by Jack Skelding 19 of Newcastle. Funeral held Saturday at Newcastle United Church with interment in Orono Cemetery.

Orono and Caledonia Split Home Games In Title Playoff

In the Orono Caledonia baseball playdown series the teams each won at home, tying the best two of three at 1-1. Orono won 6 to 1 in Orono Saturday as Crono pitcher Keith West allowed three hits, while Caledonia answered with a 9 to 6 win in their home venue Wednesday.

Mr. N. F. Porter Speaks at Evening Auxiliary Meeting

The Evening Auxiliary gathered in the Sunday School Auditorium with Mary Rutherford leading a hymn, scripture from Genesis, and a program on gardens and friendship. Mr. Porter spoke on agriculture highlighting Ontario’s size and local horticulture including the Bayview Street garden for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Fenwick PeeWees overpower Orono in Ontario final eight run sixth

Fenwick exploded in the sixth inning scoring eight runs then added four more in the seventh to beat Orono 15 to 5 and advance to the Ontario Pee Wee Championship final. Don Danchuk started for Fenwick with Al Quantrill finishing, while Paul Tamblyn led Orono with multiple run scores.
