Orono Intermediates Bow Out Caledonia Go On To Finals

Caledonia defeated Orono 8 to 5 in Port Dover to advance to the final series. Orono led 3 but six Caledonia runs in the sixth inning via two doubles and three Orono errors broke the game open. Keith West started for Orono with five innings, John Holloman finished six allowing no hits after a sixth inning change, while Caledonia’s G Mudie pitched the distance. top hitters included Armstrong West and Mercer for Orono. Caledonia benefited from timely error plays.

Fenwick PeeWees Claim Ontario PeeWee Title in Simcoe

Fenwick PeeWee baseball wins the Ontario PeeWee D championship in Simcoe Ontario with a 14 0 victory in a sudden death final against Bothwell. They defeated Orono Pee Wees two games to one in the semifinal, while 1955 saw Orono lose the Ontario Championship to Bothwell.

Adams-Picut Nuptials At Orono United Church

Glory Frances Fosetta Pigott married Beverly Fay Adams on September 22 at Orono United Church. The bride wore a Chantilly lace and tulle gown with a jeweled crown veil. maid of honor Miss Phyllis Carrieton and bridesmaid Miss Norah Wood wore champagne and moss green nylon chiffon gowns. The flower girl Miss Faye Myles wore pink nylon. Bouquets featured yellow and white mums. (Continued on page 7)

Bride-To-Be Honoured With a Miscellaneous Shower

Miss Joan Todd was guest of honor at a miscellaneous shower Friday September 28 at the home of Mrs. Kenneth Adams. Friends attended and Joan received a corsage of red roses. A reading by Nora Adams preceded a game introduced by Jill Chapman. Lunch followed served by the hosts.

District Subscribes $407 to Hospital Auxiliary

In a recent campaign in Orono district funds were raised for the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. Donations totaled 407.00 with 45.50 from Leskard 154.15 from North Orono and 207.35 from South Orono. The organizer thanks all canvassers and donors for the success.

Newtonville Royals Win Durham County Championship

Newtonville Royals clinched the Durham County championship by defeating the visiting Keene club 10 to 1 in two straight in a best of three series ending Saturday at Welcome. Newtonville led with a three run second inning and six runs in the fourth, while Phil Gilmer and brother Jim held Keene to one early run.

Whyte Foster Home Meeting Set in Darlington Township

A Wednesday meeting on October 10 in the Lions Community Centre will review the Bowmanville foster home run by Mrs Bertha Whyte. Officials from Durham and Northumberland, the health unit, and local Darlington authorities will discuss records, origins of the children, and regulations governing the home.

Orono Boy Ties 3 Records At Police Games

Orono High School athlete Erie Carleton tied three meet records at the Police games at Ontario Training School for Boys in Bowmanville. He matched the 100 yard dash record of 11 seconds, the 220 yard dash record of 26.2 seconds, and the 80 yard hurdles record of 11.4 seconds, earning three firsts in the annual event.

Masquerade Dance Planned To Be Held October 26

The Orono Fish and Hunt Club schedules its annual Hallowe en Masquerade Dance for Friday October 26 in the Township Hall Orono. The event features round and square dancing a buffet lunch and costume judging with prizes. Admission is two dollars per costumed couple and three dollars per couple not in costume. A corn roast report shows a profit of two dollars.

Roofing Contract Let For Roof Of New School Addition

Orono Public School trustees met to review a liability insurance policy for student accidents and to discuss a new coverage option. The bonded roof tender was awarded to W Bowden and son of Oshawa for 378 dollars. Plumbing contract went to Harold R Stark of Oshawa and work will start end of month.

Sixty people attended an Orono Horticultural Society meeting at Oddfellow's Hall on Monday. A W Rundle from Garden Centre Oshawa spoke on lilies with photos. Miss Carolyn Jones sang with Mrs. M H Staples. Mrs Carl Billings presented E J Hamm with a service diploma for his horticulture work.

Clarke Township council discusses future planning with Newcastle officials. Topics include road funds and culverts costs, sidewalk contracts for Kendal and Newtonville, and designation as a planning area with Toronto planning branch input. A joint meeting with Newcastle is planned.

Two Die After Car Truck Crash On Highway 401 Near Bowmanville

Two Toronto men Edward J. Garrett and Harold K. Lerson died from injuries after a head on collision with a Smith Transport tractor trailer on Highway 401 near Bowmanville in Bowmanville Hospital. A third man survived with minor injuries. the truck driver John J. Dobson escaped unhurt. Ontario Provincial Police say the car likely crossed into the eastbound lane after losing control. This crash marks seven traffic fatalities in the area for the year, up from seven. two in the same period last year.
