Trustees Seek Help to Remove Unsound Orono Trees

Orono Police Trustees met with full membership to discuss removing dangerous trees. They agreed to assist with removal but not cover full costs, and urged cooperation with County Council, Township Council, Hydro Commission, and telephone firms.

Sales Arena Set to Reopen Monday After Wind Damage

Durham County Sales Arena, torn apart by a freak windstorm on September 9, is nearly rebuilt with a new lower roof section for the livestock housing. The arena owner and auctioneer, Jack Reid, says the facility will reopen Monday, September 30 at 8:00 PM though doors and windows may not be in place. A full crew is rushing the work as plans include replacing hard maple trees and restoring the program stamping. The Orono Hydro Commission met after the village meeting, passing accounts totaling 3430.35 leaving 1580.46 in the bank, including a 1400 pension plan payment for the manager. Monthly plan costs run about 30.60. The manager cited eleven new services in the village and progress on primary and new south Cob Hill lines, plus a Peterborough convention.

Orono PeeWees Reach Ontario Championship Finals

The Ontario Baseball Association advanced the Orono PeeWee club to the Ontario Championship final series after a grouping error moving Thornhill to PeeWee C. Orono now faces Langdon east of Simcoe with date and format unsettled. The first game is expected this Saturday at Langdon or near Bronte depending on venue.

Reverend Basil Long Speaks At Evening Auxiliary Meeting

The Evening Auxiliary of the W. M. S. hosted Rev Basil Long as guest speaker for a September session in the Sunday School auditorium. The group conducted reports, planned a bake sale for October 5, and invited members to attend the Autumn Rally worship service in Newcastle United Church.

W C T U Bake Sale Raises Thirty Dollars

The regular W C T U meeting at Mrs. W H Rowe’s home on September 18 drew thirty members. After worship and roll call a home made cooling sale was held, with tea sandwiches and cookies served. Proceeds totaled thirty dollars.

Bride-To-Be Rita Bosgraaf Honored With Shower

On Monday evening Mrs. A Beauchamp hosted a miscellaneous shower for Miss Rita Bosgraaf. The guest room was decorated with pink and white streamers and gladiolas. A poem was read and Rita received a large gift basket before thanking guests. A delicious lunch followed the enjoyable event.

Hi-Teens Fun Dance Draws Crowded Night at Orono

Hi Teens staged a lively dance at the Orono Oddfellow's Hall on Saturday despite another town event. Local musicians Doug Lycett Jim Gamsby and Neil Barraball performed between sets while Joanie Alldred sang with Neil. A plastic clothes basket door prize and mixed fruit spot prizes added to the friendly evening.

Jewellery and Gift Store Opens in Orono on Oct 1

On Tuesday October 1 a new jewellery and gift store by Mr Jank Mackaye opens in the McKenzie block west side of Orono's business section at 1 30 pm. The shop offers watches rings chinaware glassware silverware and baby's wear with a 10 percent October discount and a guessing competition for a Lorie wrist watch. The store features repairs by Mr Mackaye with 26 years experience and marks Orono as its first jewellery gift shop.
