Orono Fair A Booming Success In 108th Edition

The 1959 Orono Durham Central Fair drew thousands under fine weather with strong gate receipts. Highlights included harness racing, horse shows, Holstein judging won by J. T. Brown and Carlos Tamblyn’s herd runner up, 4-H calf club entries, numerous needlework displays, and a large turnout for the opening by Garnet Rickard, Warden of the United Counties.

Orono Fair Promotion Tours Oshawa by Old-Time Travel

Four Orono residents on horse and buggy toured Oshawa last Thursday. They met Mayor L Gifford outside the shopping centre, were interviewed on CKLB Oshawa, and promoted the Exposition in Coste with racing silk driver Wm Reid joining the jog cart procession. Riddell, mayor of Orono, attended to greet Oshawa officials.

Bazaar Winners List From Fair Couture Sale

A long list of prize winners including Mrs Coates Mrs Bryant and Mrs Brown for items in children s wear mens wear and household goods such as sleeveless pullovers overalls shirts knitted rugs and aprons. The bazaar features groups Westmount Blackstock Court Venture Bowmanville and Canadian Order of Forresters. Continued on page 2.

Whitby tragedy on Highway 401 claims multiple lives

A two car head on collision on Highway 401 near Newcastle killed David Hottot 21 and two children Karen Tkaczuk nine and Ronald four months, with five others injured including Judy Mann 14 and George and Irene Tkaczuk. Polio cases and a church renovation report accompany the brief.

Orono Village Water Project Discussion With Council

A joint meeting of Clarke Township Council and Orono Police Trustees plus Ontario Water Resources Commission and consulting engineers reviewed a village water plan. Estimated first phase costs total 47 000 dollars with rates to retire the debt and service charges outlined. council set a special meeting for September 16 to decide on proceeding.

W A Meeting Notes At Orono United Church

The September W A meeting of Orono United Church met Thursday Sept 10 in the Sunday School room with Mrs H Allen presiding. Devotional by Mrs M H Staples covered Psalm 90 and Ecclesiastes chapter 3. Treasurer reported Strawberry supper net $200 and bank balance $373.50. Plans set for W A Sunday November 1 and Turkey Dinner November 4 with convenors Staples and Irwin. Rev Long to be invited as speaker.

Orono Girls Win League Softball Title

Orono clinched the league championship by defeating Bowmanville 9 to 1 in the seven game final series to win four games to two. June Armstrong pitched seven innings with one hit allowed, while Enid Tennant led Orono hitters with four hits and multiple players added three or two hits as Orono built a 6 0 lead after fourth and added three more in the sixth.

Clarke Township council defers water bylaw decision

On Wednesday night Clarke Township council and lawyer J Lovek discussed a new Building By-law with final drafting expected soon. Acting-reeve H E Walkey urged a decision on signing an agreement with the Water Resources Commission to start test drilling for an Orong water supply. Councillors Dent and Walkey supported the project while Stone and Savery reserved their decision and no action was taken.

Public School News From Orono 1959 60 Enrollment

At Orono Public School 154 pupils enrolled for the 1959 60 term. Two new boys Paul Gerry from Hamilton and Richard Shephard from Newfoundland join Mrs Lycett's room. A fall fire drill was successfully completed. After school football runs 4:00 to 4:30 with four team leaders Ralph Kennedy Rough Riders Charles Reid Argonauts Terry Graham Chestnuts Ronald Best Hellcats Chestnuts beat Hellcats 1 0. On September 21 pupils release at 2:30 for Newcastle meeting.

Drama Festival Draws Record Audiences in Orono

The annual Festival of One-Act Plays at the Durham Central Agricultural Fair in Orono hosted seven entries with a near capacity Friday crowd and a sold out Saturday show. Judge James Dean of Toronto named Knox Little Theatre’s Rise and Shine the winner while Peter McCombe and Pat Monaghan earned top acting honors.
