Clarke Township Council Meets as W. A. Reid Resigns

Clarke Township Council met on Tuesday September 2 with full attendance. They read approved minutes from the prior regular and August 25 special meeting. Resignation of W A Reid as Road Superintendent was discussed and later resolutions included advertising for a replacement and approving several payments and warrants totaling 4737.11 with adjournment to meet September 3.

Durham County Federation of Agriculture Meeting

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture held its first post holiday meeting at the home of Mr and Mrs Russell White in Elizabethville. Plans for fall and winter work were laid out and the County Hospitalization scheme granting charter approval was reported. Members are joining daily and progress is seen toward a camp site. The camp committee awaits developments before action. A second county paper is planned for this fall. The next meeting is October 2 at the home of Mr and Mrs H Ashby in Port Britain.

Road to Leskard Widened by Clarke Township Council

Clarke Township Council widened the road to Leskard between the Seventh and Eighth Concessions by leveling the surface and adding deep ditches on both sides. The project aims to improve drainage and snowplow access, with gravel planned by fall to create one of the township’s best roads. A new machine, arrived last winter, is now building up the township’s roads.

Neighbours Honour Manyers Champion Petfie Grover

R. Henry Blakely of Manyers Township Ontario, 1946 potato champion with 698 bushels of Chippewas, christens his farm Pine Ridge Farm. A new sign, painted in Millbrook, features a row of pine trees beside potatoes and hangs from an iron frame. Birthday celebrations on August 26 drew 100 neighbours and friends.

Improvements Under Way at Clarke Union School Grounds

Clarke Union School Board trustees are praised for improvements to the school grounds. A grader has levelled the grounds and a large adjacent playground is being built. The project may position Clarke Union School near the top in next year’s contest with planned grass, shrubs, trees, and flower beds.

Hog Marketing Up 18 Percent in July 1947

Hog marketing for July 1947 rose 18 percent above July 1946, as announced by Meat Board Chairman L. W. Pearsall. Eastern Canada led gains with Ontario up 39.5 percent and Quebec 49 percent, while prairie provinces declined 6.7 percent from July 1946.

Training School Trio Given Six Months Term

Three escaped inmates of the Bowmanville Training School appeared before Magistrate R B Baxter in Cobourg Police Court on Monday September 8 and were sentenced to six months in the reformatory on charges of breaking and entering The magistrate criticized neglectful parenting and the boys spoke of misunderstandings about the school including a claim it was a private school One said he left due to homesickness another wanted to learn toolmaking but was recalled for late hours

Five Thousand Attend Orono Fair On Saturday

The Durham Central Agricultural Society Fair at Orono Fair Grounds on September 5 6 drew about 5000 attendees including 2400 paid admissions. Horses cattle and sheep were strong entries with racing featuring three classes and pony races won by Oshawa brothers. The midway and needlework baking and grain sections impressed judges despite smaller seed outputs and a busy lively family atmosphere.

Winners at the Orono Fair Amateur Show include Denny Lynch and Dorothy Stapleton in Public Speaking, Marjorie White and Gwen Phasey in Girls Singing, Denny Lynch and Harry Lynch in Boys Singing, Shirley Quantrel and Denny Lynch in Piano Solo, Harry Lynch and Jack Allen in Cornet, Jack Wilson in Best Comic Number, with Jake Hallowell and Laurie Stapleton winning Old Time Whiddler's. All participants are from Orono or nearby Clarke P.O. and Newcastle areas.

Bowmanville wins the Axtell Trophy after defeating Court Oshawa 12 to 18 at Radio Park Oshawa. Veteran Blackie Blackburn led Bowmanville as Oshawa battled with Richard pitching for Oshawa. The finale ends a strong season with Bowmanville claiming the cup last held by Oshawa in 1942.
