Good Horse Races Expected At Orono Fair On Saturday

Durham Central Agricultural Society hosts a two day fair at Orono on September 5 and 6. Exhibits feature livestock cattle swine sheep and poultry plus horse races a midway entertainment and an amateur contest. Local bands clowns and a dance closing with a concert cap the event expected to draw large crowds.

Salvage Collection Saturday in Orono

Owing to paper scarcity a salvage collection of waste paper will occur in Orono on Saturday September 13. All papers and magazines should be tied in bundles and placed at the curb for collection.

Polio Death in Kingston Area Sparks Health Update

A young Brighton Village resident died of poliomyelitis at Kingston General Hospital on August 21 after visiting friends in Ontario. He fell ill after returning home. No other poliomyelitis cases were reported in the Health Unit area during the past week.

Mrs Eva Pearl Robbins longtime Leskard resident dies at home after asthma and heart failure. Born Enniskillen she married Lorne Robbins and had daughter Pauline. Funeral Aug 7 led by Mgr Mellor and Rev Hus tage. Interment in Orono Cemetery with local pallbearers.

Nursing Assistant Training Courses Open in Ontario Centers

Recent graduates praise a nine month program run jointly by the Departments of Health for Toronto Hamilton and Kingston. Trainees receive 60 dollars monthly, provide own maintenance, and are paid transportation costs. Fresh uniforms are supplied and the course combines classroom instruction with hospital experience. Eligibility includes Grade 8 education health status and ages 18 to 40. The fifth course began September 2. Special Pony Race at Orago Fair attracts ponies 14 hands

The Woman's Missionary Society met at Park Street United Church on Tuesday September 2 with Mrs Delve presiding. The theme The Bible for my life featured readings prayers and a paper on the society's literature aims read by Mrs Sta ples and Miss Gilfillan. Lions Carnival And Sports Day Proved A Great Success

The Newcastle Lions Club Carnival at Orono Community Memorial Park on August 20 attracted hundreds with games refreshment booths and a band parade by Oshawa Sea Cadet Band. Highlights included a 100 yard dash, child events, a 15 year old ball game Orono defeating Newcastle 10 to 0, and a prize draw won by Mrs Burn Lunn.

Sixty One Stations For Hog Production Testing Project

Ontario launches a cooperative hog feeding study across 61 farms to cut Grade A hog costs. Thomas L. Kennedy says each county except Prescott and Russell has at least one co operator. One herd near Guelph infected with rhinitis will be studied to compare production costs with disease free herds.
