Clarke Township Council Hears Road Funding Update

Clarke Township Council met September 5 with one absentee. The meeting noted $49,000 spent of a $51,000 road appropriation, discussed water rights sale to Lands and Forests, and considered dam vs no dam. Officials planned road work with a 50 percent subsidy, set labor rates, and approved bylaws for an Orono Fire Brigade.

Local Families Attend Sunday Gatherings and School Openings

Local residents report visits among Mr and Mrs Ken Ball and family and others including Mrs Neta Patterson and Mrs Annie Patterson. Public and Continuation Schools opened with teachers Miss Fostex and Mrs Carleton, while a party toured Glefverdean. Mr and Mrs J D Brown marked their 45th anniversary with a birthday and a radio gift.

Browview Holsteins Win Prizes at Peterborough Exhibit

At the Peterborough Exhibition Browview near Newcastle showed 19 head of cattle. Fred Hubbs judged the herd, with high placings across bulls cows heifers and herds. J W Bowman Enniskillen and J H Jose & Sons Newcastle also won multiple awards including Junior Champion Female and several firsts in calves and heifers. Gladioli from Jose earned four firsts in the flower show.

Orono Horses Dominate Peterborough Exhibition Honors

At the Peterborough Exhibition horses from Orono won top honors. C. W. Rolph’s stable earned two firsts two seconds and one third with standard breeds. The Pilgrim road horse owned by T. A. Reid & Son captured five firsts across competitions. Exhibits move to Durham County Agricultural Fair in Orono September 8 9 1950.

Police Trustees Seek No Parking Signs On Main And Mill

Orono Police Trustees met August 28 to discuss road signs bridge work and fire brigade matters. They urged Clarke Township Council to push Millson Bridge and sought No Parking Here To Gother signs 50 feet from the Main Mill intersection.

Wo men's Missionary Auxiliary Meeting Plans 65th Anniversary

The September Wo men's Missionary Auxiliary meeting in Sonic Hall was led by Mrs. M. H. Staples with piano by Mrs. A A Drummond. A treasurer's report noted 224 dollars already sent to the Presbyterial Treasurer and a July Winnipeg Relief offering forwarded to Rev. E Tasce Winnipeg. Plans for a Fall Thank Offering marking Orone Auxiliary 65th anniversary were made. Committees were appointed and Miss Mabel Davy introduced the new study book Japan Begins Again.

Second Lap Completed in New United Church Orono

The Park Street United Church project at Orono has reached the first floor level with four three ton steel girders in place and crane work completed. Stone walls will rise next as masons prepare, while the basement shows ample space for a larger Sunday School and multiple meeting rooms.

New Bull Testing Plan for Beef Cattle in Ontario

Ontario farmers will test herd sire progeny to judge gain and carcass quality. Four steer calves from different dams, aged under two months, are to be raised at Guelph. Calves follow a controlled ration, 28 day preliminary period, then 196 days on standard feed before same-plant marketing and carcass scoring. A breeders report covers days on feed, daily gain, feed costs, and cost per pound of gain.

Durham Junior Farmers Shine at CNE Judging Event

Durham County junior farmers won several awards at the Canadian National Exhibition judging contests held Friday. Francis Jose of Newcastle placed second in senior dairy cattle judging, with R. Bruce Taylor of Enniskillen and William Ferguson of Nestleton among other livestock winners. Harold Hammond of Bowmanville placed second in junior grain and root judging, and Durham and Ontario County groups led the parade and attended CNE dinners and the evening show.

After the Mizpah Benediction, a hearty lunch followed as the president thanked Mrs. Chas. Thompson for hosting members at her home. Assisting hostesses were Mrs. Reg. Elliott, Mrs. A. Low, and Mrs. Percy Burley for the event.

Orono feed mill switches to electric power operation

The Durham County Farmers' Co operative now runs the Orono feed mill on electricity after rewiring from water and diesel. A ten horse motor will be in service in about a week while two thirty horse motors power the grinder. Electric power promises faster, steadier operation and higher output than the prior diesel system.
