Blitz Campaign reports six thousand two hundred dollars raised

The Blitz Campaign announced a total of 6200.00 by Tuesday evening with over 450 donors and only one gift above 100.00. Canvassers worked energetically, continuing to collect funds from the majority in the area as the campaign progresses.

Poll Finds Durham Residents Back Universal Medicare Plan

A survey by Russell C. Honey shows 61% of Durham County residents favor universal Medicare. Of 12 000 mailed questionnaires, 1 100 replies yield a 9.16% response. The poll covers death penalty, prices for farm produce, constitution, federal versus provincial power, business control, decentralization, House reform, and university training.

Durham Board Approves Remedial Reading Program

Durham County High School Board approved hiring a remedial reading teacher under a reading consultant after a Carnegie test study of 800 Grade 9 students across five high schools Port Hope Millbrook Courtice Clarke and others. A postgraduate student option was noted.

Ketchum Urges Canadian Policy Shift at Orono Meeting

Tony Ketchum told an N D P gathering in Odd Fellows Hall Orono that Canada must refocus federal action on conservation water pollution and economic reforms. He criticized long flag debates and obsolete technical training while urging practical Indian policy and development of arts and industry. Marie Yeo performed a recital and vocal, and lunch followed.

Clarke Teachers Discuss New Math

The Clarke Teachers met at Lockhart's school on October 18 for a second discussion of the New Mathematics course. Our president Mrs Wannan opened the session while secretary Mr G Ellis read last meeting’s minutes and Mrs Greenwood and Mrs Ingram provided lunch.

Work Processing At North Entrance

Construction at the north entrance from Highway 115 is near completion with base paving and an island separating lanes already shaped. Attention will shift to the south entrance for changes in the coming week.

First Major Break In Water System

The first major interruption in the Orono Water System occurred Wednesday morning when an eight inch water main on Mill Street North broke in front of Mr. Malley. The break interrupted service in parts of the village for two to three hours. Gatiney Construction repaired the line under guarantee.

Oshawa Ski Club Plans Snow Making and T Bar Lift

The Oshawa Ski Club near Kirby advances a busy season with a snow making machine and a new T Bar lift east of the hill. Bulldozed areas will boost skiing, new services and lighting along the lift line may enable possible Wednesday night skiing to gauge interest.
