Orono Lodge 486 Installs Officers at Open Installation Night

Orono Lodge No. 486 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows held its annual installation of officers on October 20 in the town hall with about two hundred attendees. The program opened with Abide with Me and the National Anthem, as D.D.G.M. Ross F. Henry installed officers assisted by a guard from Oshawa. The Grand Master urged support for the Fifth Victory Loan, and a film titled A Night of Bombing was shown.

Orono Hydro Commission Records Solid Bank Balance

The Orono Hydro Commission and Orono Police Trustee Board met October 25 with full attendance. A Commerce delegation learned debenture progress and financials. bills totaling $277.69 and $171.73 were paid. Bank balance stood at $2,780.09. An address on home front duties preceded evening dancing and a $20.41 door collection for the Order war fund.

The Salvation Army canvass in Orono was successful, raising 100 for the organization. Chairman J J Mellor, and volunteers Mrs J C Gamey and Mr and Mrs W S Cobbledick led the effort, with praise for donors and the army’s good work.

Halloween Party at Park Street Church

The Sunday School room at Park Street Church hosted a Wednesday October 27 Hallowe'en frolic with all ages in costumes. A parade followed the sing song, judged by Miss Sherwin, Myrtle Tamblyn and Mrs. Littlewood. Prizes went to Greta Mercer Joyce Tennant Carol Staples Marvin Lunn John Forrester and Douglas Lycett. The event ended with games lunch and the Mizpah Benediction.

Ottawa reports progress on Canada's Fifth Victory Loan with Tuesday sales at 70.4 million and the accumulative total reaching 557.3 million. The corresponding figure for the previous loan period stood at 503.9 million.

Col J C Gamey Confined To Military Hospital

Colonel J C Gamey of the Midland Regiment stationed at Prince Rupert B C has been confined to the military hospital there for three weeks with a severe pneumonia. He cannot sit up in bed but hopes for a speedy recovery and return to his hometown to recuperate.

Orono Chamber Plans Poultry Market Amid Cigarettes Sent Overseas

The Orono Chamber of Commerce met on Thursday October 21 to discuss a poultry market planned for around December 17 to avoid Christmas timing. Forty nine parcels of cigarettes were sent to soldiers overseas from Clarke Township with two more cartons to follow. Delegates R R Waddell and C T Miller were appointed to interview the Hydro Commission about its financial status, as the chamber backs hydro purchases and its progress.

Plowing Match Held by Durham Ontario Group

The Durham County Branch of the Ontario Plowmen's Association hosts a plowing match on Friday October 29 at Norman Rickard’s farm Clarke Township near Newcastle. Nine classes attract competitors from far and wide and draw many spectators. entrance through James T. Brown’s farm.

Durham Holstein Nominated For All-Canadian

Glenafton Pilot, Junior and Reserve Grand Champion Bull for John Cruickshank, nominated in the Senior Yearling Class at the Holstein Championship Show in Orono. Altogether 85 animals from 74 breeders in seven provinces nominated for the All-Canadian Contest conducted by the Holstein Friesian Journal. Of these nominees 60 are from Ontario. A judges committee will select All-Canadian and Reserve All-Canadian in each class with results announced early December.

Tea and Coffee Rationing May End By Christmas

Wartime Prices and Trade Board officials say tea and coffee rationing in Canada could be lifted by Christmas if stock supplies justify it. A decision hinges on the next five to six weeks, with loosening possible unless war developments worsen. Both commodities use the same coupons, so removing one without the other could cause confusion. The ration, established in August 1942, was increased in September.
