Durham Plowing Match Draws Large Crowd At Newcastle Farm

Despite rain the Durham County Plowmen Association event drew a large turnout on Norman Rickard’s farm half a mile west of Newcastle. Winners spanned classes from sod plowing to tractors with honours to Marquis, Allin, Henry, Hooton, Ballantyne and Kellogg among others. Special prizes included cash and a War Savings Certificate.

Wartime Ration Coupon Schedules and RAF Combined Operations

The notice lists valid coffee and tea coupons for November 1943 with multiple dates and limits for red sugar butter and meat coupons, plus D series preserves and spreads. It also cites RAF and Naval Forces pre invasion exercises with Combined Operations at a training center. Mustangs aided defense of an airfield, which the attackers captured after a prolonged battle.

Higher Price For Drawn Poultry News Item

Wartime Prices and Trade Board amending order allows drawn poultry to be sold up to ten cents per pound above the maximum price for undrawn dressed poultry. Birds must be fully cleaned with head feet and organs removed, though heart gizzard and liver may count in weight. If drawing requested after weighing undrawn, retailer may charge up to ten cents.

Prices Unjust Firm Fined For Overpricing Frames

The Merchants Portrait Company of Toronto was fined 250 plus costs for selling picture frames at prices higher than reasonable. Crown evidence showed frames costing 1.47 dollars sold at 16.90. The magistrate noted the consumer cares about the article's actual value, not agent commissions.

Emma Caroline Carscadden Dies in Bowmanville at 78

Emma Caroline Carscadden widow of John D Carscadden passed away at her daughter Hazel Carscadden’s home in Toronto on October 22 in her 79th year. She had endured illness and strokes but enjoyed reading and family visits. She lived in Bowmanville 17 years and was active in church and WMS. Her daughter was Hazel Carscadden.

Mrs Hills and Fred Blackburn Attend Funeral in Newcastle

Mrs Kenneth Hills visited with her sister Mrs Herbert Knapp in Bowmanville for a week. Fred Blackburn and family visited relatives in Newcastle. Mr Blackburn attended the funeral of Mrs Samuel Bragg in Newcastle. Murray Patterson underwent an appendix operation in Bowmanville Hospital. Funeral services for the deceased were held at Beech Avenue with Ex-Chancellor Dr Bowles and Rev Albert Carscadden officiating. Interment followed in Bowmanville Cemetery.

Dorothy Stapleton And Tommy Coatham Win Silver Medals At Contest

Dorothy Stapleton and Tommy Coatham earned silver medals at a contest. The Newcastle Box Factory owned by J Anderson Smith was partially destroyed by fire on Wednesday night. Fire swept the east wing, started in the varnish room, and caused thousands of dollars in damage before fire brigades from Bowmanville and Newcastle controlled it.

Durham County Holsteins Sell Well at Fall Consignment

Durham County breeders sold fifteen Holsteins at the Fourth Annual Fall Special Consignment Sale on October 28 in Brampton. Cedar Dale Stock Farms of Orono topped sales with a two-year-old heifer at 460 dollars and several calves priced from 235 to 320 dollars. Other sellers included F W L Tamblyn of Orono and J J Jose of Newcastle with cows and calves bringing 145 to 385 dollars. Arch Muir & Sons of Courtice and James T Brown of New Castle also posted prices for multiple two-year and younger stock.

Church Services Highlight Park Street Parish

A good sized congregation attended the morning service at Park St Church last Sunday. The pastor’s discourse God Our Shield was timely and interesting with choir music blending with the sermon. In the evening a portion of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress was discussed.

W M S Meeting Hosts Nomination for 1944 Officers

The Woman's Missionary Society met on Tuesday November 2 in Park Street Sunday School room with Mrs JM Staples presiding. A nominating committee was formed to prepare a slate for December. An invitation from Kirby Auxiliary was read for the November 8 Thank-Offering. The meeting included Bible readings from Acts and messages about refugee aid and the Guatemala light story.

Nine Contestants Take Part in WCTU Autumn Contest

Nine contestants took part in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union Autumn Silver Medal Contest in Park Street Sunday School room on Friday October 29. Five girls led by Dorothy Stapleton and four boys led by Tommy Coatham competed with judges Mr McGinnis Mrs Stanley Ball and Miss Bertha Cain. Prize winners received medals and books, with more entertainment by local students and soloists.
