Orono Horticulture Forms Junior Group

The Orono Horticultural Society met at Oddfellow's Hall with about fifty members. They formed a Junior Horticultural Society for ages 8 to 16, with meetings the fourth Thursday each month starting October 27 at the Orono Municipal Centre from 7 to 8 pm.

Estella Penfound Dies After Long Illness in Ontario

Miss Estella Penfound of R R Newcastle died October 15 1960 at Oshawa General Hospital following a year long illness. She was active with the United Church Women’s organizations and held life memberships in the Women’s Missionary Society. Surviving are her sister Muriel and four brothers John Roy Clarence and J Allin. Funeral services were held October 18 at Morris Funeral Chapel Bowmanville with interment in Bowmanville Cemetery. Pallbearers were local men including John Penfound and Simon Penfound.

Orphans Join Six Team Group Form Lakeshore League

Representatives from Orono Bowmanville Cobourg Oshawa Port Hope and Trenton RCA agreed to form a Lakeshore hockey loop to begin November 25. Lindsay and Lakefield did not attend and have until November 1 to file.

Barraball Family Hosts 25th Wedding Anniversary

A Lively gathering at the Luther Barraball home honored Roy and Frankie Barraball on their 25th wedding anniversary. Neil Wood spoke, Sid Barrabail read an address, gifts of money and a three tiered cake were presented, and a lunch followed the pleasant event.

Cement Pour Advances At Orono Swimming Pool

Work progresses on the Orono pool with steel framework completed early week. Cement floor poured Tuesday and walls and copings grinted with cement on Wednesday using a spray-on process under pressure.

The Orono Police Trustees announce three evening sessions at the Orono Community Centre next week from 8:00 to 9:00 to answer questions about Municipal Water. Residents are invited to present inquiries and learn about the proposal.

At a meeting Mr Dane Found urged Orono to play a single four point game schedule starting January 1st and discussed home ice possibly being in Newcastle.

Orono W A Turkey Supper and November Meeting Plan

The October Wo mens Association of the Orono United Church met October 13 with 16 members present. President Mrs H Allen led, prayers and hymns noted, and a devotional by Mrs C Wood followed. A hockey banquet catering check was acknowledged, a turkey supper plan priced 1.50 for adults and 25 cents for under 12, and delegates to the W A Presbytery meeting at Ajax on November 19 were named. The November meeting is set for November 10 hosted by Mrs Irwin.

Local Artists Attend Sketching Tour at Burleigh Falls

Four members of the Orono Art Class and instructor attended a weekend sketching seminar at Burleigh Falls with fifty six participants from East Central Ontario. Instructors included Mr Bennett and two others. the event, sponsored by the East Central Ontario Arts and Crafts Association, ran Saturday and Sunday amid vivid autumn color.

Blood Donor Clinic Seeks 250 Bottles in Bowmanville

Bowmanville and District Red Cross and the Orono Branch co operate to hold a Blood Donor Clinic on November 2 at the Lions Centre Beech Ave Bowmanville. Donors aged 18 to 65 in good health may attend from 1 30 to 4 30 PM or 6 30 to 9 PM transportation available on request. Contact local organizers to reserve a donation date.

Orono Welcomes New Wood Plant and Township Assessor

Orono hosts a new wood working plant at the Flax Mill on Main Street run by Douglas Simpson of Orono and Jacobsen of Newcastle making display units and doing refinishing. Clarke Township selects Alfred Johnston of Pontypool as Assessor for two townships amid debates on Mosport Ltd roads and Winter Works program funding.

Orono Mission Band Sees Meeting Led by Sharon Simpson

The Orono United Church Mission Band met Monday afternoon with president Sharon Simpson in the chair in the Sunday School Auditorium. Sharon Allin led hymns and worship, leaders were appointed for groups, and officers were named including President Sharon Simpson and Treasurer Carol Gilbank.

Bowmanville Drama Group to Stage Three One-Act Plays

The Bowmanville Drama Work Shop invites Orono and district amateur dramatics enthusiasts to a meeting at 7:45 p.m. October 20 at the Lions Centre. The group, formed last year, plans three December 9 one-act plays, with back-stage crews and more directors sought. Membership fees: $5 individual, $8 family, $3.50 student.
