Harvest Festival Brings Orono United Church Full Services

The Orono United Church marked its Harvest Festival and Church Anniversary on Sunday October 16 with full morning and evening services. Rev S Littlewood from Dundalk Ontario preached at both services and noted the church stands mortgage free. A baptism and transfers were recorded as the congregation offered fruit boxes at the front of the chancel.

Public Address System Installed at Orono High School

A new public address system, installed by the Durham County District High School Board, is now in use at Orono High School. Speakers are in three classrooms with transmitting centre in the office, used for morning opening exercises and school announcements.

Garden Hill Church 75th Anniversary Guests Visit

Mrs. H Walsh and guests from Toronto attended the Garden Hill Church 75th anniversary service on Sunday. Arthur Drummond arrived home from hospital improved in health and Mrs J E Richards returned home after a week in St Catharines.

Mrs Ida M Lang Rites Held In Ontario Funeral

Mrs Ida M Lang died October 15 1955 at her son's Chicago home age 88 89. Born Ida Bigelow in Clarke Township Ontario she spent 31 years in Chicago with son Ross. Funeral at Lang Memorial Chapel Orono Ontario October 18 conducted by Rev John Kitchen and Rev H B Neal. Interment in family Mausoleum.

Orono Athletic Association Plans Annual Meeting

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association invites parents to its annual meeting this Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in the Orono Municipal Building Community Room. Formed in 1943, the group operates the Orono Rink and supports hockey teams, summer recreation at Orono Park, and two hardball teams in the Lakeshore Minor Baseball league. officers will be elected and winter sports plans set.

Slowing Sun Set Mistaken for Fire

Late Thursday afternoon the Orone Fire Brigade answered a call to the home of Mr. Georges Wilson in the Village. Mrs. Wilson said she saw what appeared to be fire as the setting sun shone through the windows. the house was not on fire and the alarm was canceled after the crew arrived.

Fire Drills At Orono School Speed Up Evacuation

During Fire Prevention Week the Orono School conducted drills for both High School and Public School pupils. A time test saw over two hundred students exit in fifty five seconds. New second story exits, installed this year by the Orono Public School Board, helped reduce the clearance time. The Public School plans a fire gong to alert all rooms since one primary room did not hear the alarm.

Durham Federation Considers Fieldman Hire At Fall Meeting

The Durham Federation of Agriculture discussed hiring a fieldman for five fall and winter months to improve co-ordination with county agricultural groups and recruit new members. A committee including Vice-President Allin and President Nichols will explore options and may hire through the Durham Agriculture. Delegates to the Ontario Federation convention in Toronto were named and plans for a December 1 Pot Luck Supper in Newcastle were made.

Counties Farmers Rally To Protect Dairy Market

Representatives from Durham Northumberland Peterborough Victoria Hastings Prince Edward Lennox and Addington met in Orono for a Zone III Ontario Federation of Agriculture session chaired by Don Thompson. They endorsed supporting provincial land expropriation safeguards and condemned cheese imports from New Zealand as overloading Ontario's already stressed dairy market.

Orono Orphans Open Season With Home Ice At Port Perry

The Orono Orphans began practice for the 1954-55 season with 25 players traveling to Cobourg for opening session. A second Cobourg practice is set for Thursday night as newcomers try out. Bill Gearing may fill Bud Hooper’s net, with more signings expected. Percy Lunn named manager and A. E. West coach to fill vacancies. Drone Orphans will use Port Perry Arena for all home games under contract.

Twenty Enroll In Home Nursing Course At Orono

The Canadian Red Cross Drano Branch held the first Home Nursing Course meeting in St Saviour's Parish Hall. About twenty attended to receive instructions. The next session is set for Monday October 24 at 7:00 p.m., with weekly Wednesday classes for about twenty weeks.
