Hawke Couple Celebrate Diamond Anniversary at Orono Farm

Mr and Mrs J E Hawke marked sixty years since their October 3 marriage in Orono Methodist Church. The celebration at the northwest Orono home drew over 150 friends and 10 children and included a baptism of twin great grandchildren Ward and Wade McKee and Julia Hawke.

Peterborough Holstein Herd Sells For $41 730

A crowd of about 800 gathered at Peterborough on October 8 to honor Norman R. McConkey’s lifetime of breeding Holsteins. Liflee herd brought $41,780 total with an average of $491. top price $2,250 went to Guillermo Gomez for Kenmore Eco-Sylv Francy.

Baird Captures Champion Hip At Plowing Match

The 1956 International Plowing Match at Brooklin closes in triumph with 125000 visitors over two days. Hugh I Baird, 22, Blackwater, wins Canadian Championship in tractor two furrow class and Ontario Championship. Brampton District High School tops Inter-secondary School event. Orono Public School approves 111200 washroom addition cost

At a board meeting the Orono Public School Board set the washroom addition cost at 11200 including contingencies, $300 under the original estimate. Grants from the province and Durham County District High School Board will lower local costs. Contracts awarded include glazing 44 dollars, terrazzo floors 767 dollars, trim labor 225 dollars, doors and frames 211.27 dollars, plywood at 12 percent, wiring 275 dollars. Completion expected by December 1.

Pattern of Achievement Topic At Township Teachers Meet

The Clarke Township teachers met October 15 1956 at Antioch School. Mr W Watt Orono High School principal spoke on Pattern of Achievement and the issues facing students entering high school underprepared. He cited English and grammar as crucial and noted distractions from TV and home upheaval.

Bowmanville 3-Year-Old Dies After Car Collision

Stephen Burns, three year old son of Mr and Mrs Robert Burns of 88 Ontario Street Bowmanville, was critically injured when struck by a car driven by Ralph Whyte, 17, of Bowmanville. Whyte said he was southbound at about 30 mph when the child darted into the street. He applied brakes but could not avoid the collision. Stephen was taken to Bowmanville Memorial Hospital and then to Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto, where he died.

Lucy H Cowan Dies in Stayner Rest Home at 78

Lucy H. Cowan died October 9 in a Stayner rest home while visiting Barrie. She was born to the Hallowell family of Starkville and widow of Fred Cowan of Orono. Funeral October 38 in Lang Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Kitchen officiating. Interment in Orono Cemetery. Surviving are daughter Vera Crease of Barrie and son Harry of Orono, plus brother Arthur Hallowell of Peterborough.

Obituary: Delbert Nelson Myles of Orono

Delbert Nelson Myles of Orono died suddenly in Oshawa on September 12 1956. Born April 19 1887 in South Woodslee Ontario he was a 25 year member of IC CF No 436 Orono and joined United Carpenters and Joiners of America No 397 Oshawa. Survived by wife Beatrice Hiller three daughters Thelma Gravenhurst Edna Peterborough Shirley Bowmanville and three sons Le Roy Whitby and Howard, five granddaughters and five grandsons five sisters and two brothers. Funeral held at Barlow Funeral Home Orono on September 15 with interment in Orono Cemetery conducted by Rev John Kitchen.

About two hundred guests gathered at Oddfellow's Hall on October 10 to honor Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Farrow on 25 years of marriage. The event featured floral decorations, a three layer cake, tributes, songs, dancing, and a TV gift presentation amid warm wishes for continued happiness.
