Gibson Farms Nets Second in Eighth Annual Egg Laying Contest

The Gibson Farms pen near Bowmanville Ontario finished second among twenty-one entrants in Harrow Ontario at the Dominion Department of Agriculture event. Don Gibson’s birds peaked in March and April with a 78 percent production, averaging 226.8 eggs per bird and a top hen at 304 eggs in fifty-one weeks. The farm invites public viewing and plans to reuse the flock next spring to sustain top quality for buyers.

Orono to Host Stock Judging Contest for Junior County Boys

The Annal Live stock judging event will take place at Orono Town Hall on Tuesday October 11. Junior contestants under thirty in the county pay a 25 cent entry fee and enter in senior and junior groups with prize money shared. Belleville man dies in burning truck crash near Cobourg

W Ewart Hannah of Front Street Belleville died in the cab of a Canada Transport Company tractor trailer after a crash at the Kingston Road crossing two miles east of Cobourg. Companion Harry McCreary of Belleville escaped injury as the truck burst into flames. coroner Dr W E Wilkins ordered an inquest.

Obituary notes George Mercer of Kendal died Tuesday at age 84. Born in Whitchurch England he emigrated to Canada as a youth, later settled near Kendal with a farm past retirement in town. Survived by wife Jenny Lowery and seven children.

Seven year old Morrish boy killed in highway accident

Kenneth Brown son of Mr and Mrs Fred Brown of Morrish was struck and killed when he ran into a car driven by W R Scott of Napanee. Scott said the boy with two companions darted onto the highway shoulder leaving no chance to stop. J Ballantyne, following, corroborated the driver’s account to police.

Clarke District L O L entertained Monday by Orono Orange Lodge 409 with members from Newcastle Kendall Cowanville and Newtonville. Three members two from Orono and one from Newcastle were elevated from Orange to Blue Degree by the Orono degree team in a well executed ceremony.

Council Grants 200 To Agricultural Society

Clarke Township council met October 3 with full attendance. It approved a final grant of 200 dollars to the Durham Central Agricultural Society for the year and authorized payments for taxes collection, tax collector’s services, and various town hall and material bills. The session adjourned to November 1 for general business.
