Clarke Township Council welcomes John W Stone in 1968

John W Stone returns to Clarke Township Council replacing Orme Fails who retires after three years. Stone joins Rod Carveth Frank Gray H E Walkey and Roy A Foster, all to two year terms by acclamation. School Board and Police Trustees re elected unopposed. Low attendance at meetings.

Clarke Public School Board Nomination Meeting Report

Mr James Lowery spoke at the nomination meeting Friday about phasing out Township School Boards as of January 1 1969 and Clarke Township Board vanishing after December 1968. He listed completed and ongoing building projects and noted county based board formation. Lowery was re elected by acclamation and Mrs Barlow returns by acclamation. Lawrence Greenwood noted uncertainty over how the new County Board would be set up and unclear answers remain.

Grono Trustees Report On Year s Work In Orono Village

Douglas Simpson of the Orono Police Trustee Board outlined major village projects over recent years including a water system, a new fire engine, a complete street lighting system, a new dump site, a Post Office, tree planting and grass cutting, and updates to the Orono Hydro System. He hopes the 1963 road program to enhance the village will be completed. Floyd Nicholson of the Hydro noted a $25,000 debenture request but aims to avoid it with tightening budgets. The Hydro manager reported the system in good shape and noted underground cable work on Division Street to spring 1968 and the need for fourteen Mercury vapor street lights to finish the lighting program.

Pupils Plan Ice Rink For Nearby Schools

Alan Gibson principal of Kirby Centennial School invites help for a winter ice rink project at Lockhart Public School and Kirby Centennial School. Students plan a plastic sheet ice surface over a 2x4 frame to address drainage, seeking ideas, tips, and reduced material costs from parents and locals at R R 2 New Castle, phone 987 4571.

Library Receives Further Gift From Clarke Township Board

Clarke Township Library Board met Tuesday with Librarian Mrs. Robinson reporting 1186 books loaned in October 1967 versus 1002 in 1966. They may store local history, heard on Kingston seminar, and noted $595.49 from Renwick Estate plus accrued interest for a future building fund. A provincial grant of $900 was received, equal to Orono Library’s grant. The board plans to operate within a $4,400 budget with a small year-end balance.

Vital Victory Wins Methuselah Feature At Mohawk

Vital Victory driven by Gerald Robinson of Orono captured the Methuselah race at Mohawk on Tuesday night, upsetting favorites. The race marked the retiring horses’ final circuit year, awarding Robinson a first place purse a blanket and an engraved silver tray. Vital Victory reaches 75 career wins.

Orono Horticultural Society Dinner Beats Winter Blues

The Membership Dinner on November 23 in the church main hall offered an engaging evening with casseroles pies cakes and jellies plus ham and rolls. President C Tallice welcomed members and guests including district director Mrs Stephens and local figures. Rev Basil Long shared wedding photos, Mrs Billings received a Service Diploma, and prize draws highlighted the night. Christmas Show set for December 14 with six classes and prize list announced.

Board Threatened With Strike Action

The Clarke Township Library Board faces potential strike if payment cheques for the librarian and assistant librarian are not issued by December 1. The notice appears in the librarians report on Tuesday with continued coverage on page 7.

Clarke Township council hears retirement bid and budget notes

Clarke Township council meeting covered retirement hints from Council member Mr Orme Falls and calls for experience of Mr John Stone. Deputy reeve Earl Walkey announced road budget cuts, property purchase for gravel and possible dump use, 21 400 cost. Authorities discussed road by laws, a Needs Study, oiling 31 miles and snow ploughing 170 miles, and limited sanding. Reeve Roy Foster praised local progress, library, ambulance service, and the Kendal Provincial Park link.
