Anniversary tribute marks 28 years for Hills couple

On Saturday November 18 in Arena Odielow Hall friends and relatives gathered to honor Kenneth and Viola Hills on their 28th wedding anniversary. Family welcomed guests as a two tier cake graced the tea table and a 2 dinette suite was presented.

Cooking School Held In Orono

Cooking school held Thursday evening in the Orono United Church lower auditorium. Girl Guides and the U C W sponsored a Consumer Gas cooking demonstration. A Centennial film opened the program and two ladies prepared dishes later given to lucky ticket winners. Prizes included a Teflon lined granite fry pan to Marilyn Major and blue flame tumblers to Mrs. H Gibson and Mrs. Wm Miller, with several other winners named.

Wedding Reception Celebrates 23 Years of Marriage

A wedding reception for the bride of 23 years featured sisters Miss Maudie Ruiter of Providence and another sister, musical numbers by Misses Adams, a humorous skit by relatives, followed by dancing and social time.

Ontario education plan to form county boards

Premier John Robarts announced a new education plan on a county basis that Durham County District High School Board has accepted in principle. The consolidation will dissolve about 1,000 boards by end of 1968, with transition to be smooth and nondisruptive for students. The new board will be elected from all county municipalities, though size may be limited. The plan includes local tax collection and a unified K through 13 system, affecting roughly 7,500 public and 3,000 secondary students in Durham.

Orono Man Wins Two Breed Championships at Royal Winter Fair

Mr Len Pears of Orono earned two breed championships at the Royal Winter Fair in Rhode Island Reds Mille Fleurs and claimed first hen and cock in each breed. He also placed two birds second and two third in White Wyndettes among ten birds shown with eight winning placements. Pears has long been a noted poultry breeder with success at local fairs and shows.

Orono Firefighters To canvass village for Muscular Dystrophy

Orono firefighters plan a Saturday canvass in the village to raise funds for muscular dystrophy research. The annual effort will see most members donate their time to collect donations.

Clarke High School Holds Capacity Commencement

A full auditorium filled for Clarke High School graduation last Friday. Diploma and scholarship awards were presented while valedictorian Karen Lee Leskard led the class. Guest speaker Walter G. Pitman of Trent University urged education beyond mere degrees and highlighted interdependence of subjects, with music from the Orono Junior Band and Clarke High School Choir enhancing the program. A pre ceremony dinner honored honour graduates and staff.

Orono Nursery Completes 25 Years of Service

Mr. Freeman Eddy retired after 25 years with the Department of Lands and Forests. On November 21 District Forester A Walrath read a telegram from the Minister and presented Eddy a gold Quarter Century Pin. Nursery staff gave Eddy a watch and bouquets to Mrs. Eddy as they wished a long quiet retirement.
