Election Notice for Orono Police Trustees Four Candidates
Four candidates compete for three police trustee seats in Orono with Monday December 4 polling from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Current trustees Gordon Simpson Lyall Lowery and Roy Forrester run alongside Harry Mercer who serves until 1961. The annual nomination meeting drew eighteen attendees at the Orono Community Centre where all four were nominated and Mercer reported a year end village balance of 340 dollars with 815 dollars in fire attendance fees and outside residents’ receipts. Trustees cited street lighting improvements costing 1709.22 and called for a new dumping area and safer entrances linking to Highway 115 as development may push east. Continued remarks on page 712.

At the University of Toronto fall convocation on November 24 three honorary LL D receivers had ties to Orono farms. Recipients included Dr. Jacob Viner Harvard economist and Professors James A Thompson and C B Sissons. Thompson earlier owned Joe Hall property near the old mill and helped shape Orono’s southern approach. Sissons taught at Victoria College and has lived on the W L Smith farm since 1921.

Orono Sunday School To Present Pageant
Orono United Church Sunday School plans a pageant titled The Four Paths to Bethlehem on Saturday December 23 at 7 30 pm in the church sanctuary. Mrs D Powell directs the kindergarten group about 40 children and Marilyn directs the primary department about the same size. The pageant is led by organist and choirmaster Mr Hayek with emphasis on vocal and speech training costuming and lighting. The board of management reports the Golden Plough Lodge expenses for 1961’s first ten months totaled 145 955 with 61 248 from residents, net 84 707, and 70 percent government subsidy reducing county liability to 25 412. Per diem rose from 3.04 to 4.33. improvements include redecorating 682 and tiling 2 050. sewer to the farm house at 5305. A potential enclosed walk between buildings could cost about 6 000, with 60 percent subsidy recoverable.
