Wo men’s Christian Temperance Union Holds November Meeting

The November Wo men’s Christian Temperance Union meeting at president Mrs A Walsh home featured devotional on Prayer from Luke 15 and a report from all departments. Final plans were set for the Silver Medal Contest on November 26 and a Christmas program with tea at December meeting.

Orono Club Sh-Boom Dance Recap and Plans

The Club Sh-Boom Glub Sh-Boom held another Friday party at Orono Town Hall organized by Mary Ann Armstrong. Thanks are extended to Bonnie and Fay Adams Marshall Keast and others who supplied music and to Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Stapleton who chaperoned. A prize was donated by Mr C Tyrrell for an elimination dance. If winter permits a skating party may open the season at Orono Arena and the next dance is planned for January.

Durham County Co operative Medical Services shows membership rise

The seventh annual meeting at Yelverton Community Centre reported membership up by 67 to a total of 777. Secretary-Treasurer Suopert Moffat outlined a 1953-54 year with a small net loss of 278 dollars while premiums rose to 30 dollars to align with provincial plans.

Police Trustees To Install Gas Heating In Armouries

Orono Police Trustees met to choose heating for the Armouries deciding on a gas conversion unit for the current furnace at 425 dollars supplied by Ontario Shore Gas Company Oshawa. Tenders for stocker eas and oil units exceeded 800 dollars so not chosen. Future wiring and possible auxiliary gas unit kept in plan for the Orono Hydro Office room. Caretaker duties and scheduling for users referred to a future date.

Albert J Bigelow 1871 1954 Kirby farmer dies in Ontario

Albert John Bigelow died November 5 1954 at Cobourg General Hospital in his 83rd year after eight months of illness. He was born November 8 1871 in Clarke Township and lived as a Kirby farmer. Survived by wife Maggie Elizabeth two sons Philip and Wilfred and sister Ida of Chicago. Funeral November 8 at Kirby United Church conducted by Rev John Kitchen.

Kirby W. M. S. studies Christianity in India

The regular W. M. S. meeting at the church on Thursday evening November 4 opened with worship and Psalm 67. Mrs. Gus Wilson offered a prayer for India. Mrs. W. Cochrane read Acts, with comments from the president. Hymn 388 followed. The study book’s second chapter on India was led by Mrs. Wm Rutherford with several assistants. The meeting closed with a unison prayer.

Orono Women's Institute Reconsiders Disbanding

The Orono Women's Institute plans a Friday meeting to review a motion reported as disbanding. Institute Headquarters says the motion was out of order under the constitution since the vote occurred at the same meeting rather than the following one, so the institute remains active pending discussion of its future.

Scott Couple Celebrate 40th Anniversary at Family Gathering

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert N. Scott of Orono Route 2 marked their 40th wedding anniversary on November 11 at their daughter Dr and Mrs. Wm Ruddell’s home in Newcastle. Present were family members including Trewin EB Scott Wayne Gail Gary Tyrone Roy H Scott Anna Marie Ruth Aylward Little Barry Dianne Judith Master Scott Ruddell and others. The table featured pink candle centerpieces and a wedding cake with gifts including a chest of flatware from the family.

Assessments Lowered by Court of Revision at Orono

The Court of Revision in Township Hall Orono reduced total assessments by 460 dollars from five complaints. Two cases saw reductions, three were confirmed. A $200 reduction affected land of Mr. A Graham Concession 2 Clazio. Building assessments for Stenos and properties of Alfred Graham H Bellamy Concession 8 and William Riddell were reviewed.

Orono Scout Troop To Organize This Monday

Scouting in Orono becomes a reality as the 1st Orono Scout Troop holds its first meeting Monday evening November 22 at 7 30 p m. Boys are urged to attend to enroll. The Armou ries will host the meeting with permission from the Police Trustees. Scout master Andy McGill leads with assistants Sandy Russell and Klaus Soenmaker, who bring experience from Toronto Barrie and Holland.

Tennant Bros Take PCV Licence From H Hooey

Harold Hooey of Orono sold his PCV Class A franchise to Donald Tennant of Orono and Glenn Tennant of Hampton. The new owners plan to continue the two day service and freight operations that had been run from Toronto and other centers.

Organization Preservation Plea Echoes Community Service

A plea supports continuing the organization which has long shown interest in serving the community. Backers argue its work strengthens local welfare and civic life, urging sustained support and involvement.

Extensive Road Program In And Around The Village

The village outskirts see peak road building with resurfacing south of the village starting at Barraball's garage and moving south on the dirt portion. By pass at Orono to be surfaced soon. North of the village the sixth line west of Highway 115 is being upgraded with dirt fill and bank grading. Cob Hill work includes torn out sidewalk and graded slope with earth shifted eastward. The long-travelled road has seen improvements long overdue.

Orono Amateur Athletic Association meets to plan rink operation and a juvenile winter program. Rink duties assigned, sawdust removal approved, and public address system funded. Three hockey teams Pee Wees Bantams and Midgets to be sponsored with leagues possible in Millbrook Kendal and Newcastle. Season tickets set at 3 dollars and 5 dollars family. public skating fee 25 cents. Donations invited.

Ontario to spend 57 million on provincial roads this year

M A Elson deputy minister reports at Canadian Good Roads meeting in Toronto that about 57 million will fund road contracts and maintenance this year. Projects include granular base research, foundation work for bridges, asphalt pavement design, and 427 miles paved or resurfaced.

Orono Orphans Chase Early Lead With Three Wins
