Scout Paper Drive Set For Saturday November 19
The Orone Boy Scouts will hold their regular paper drive this Saturday November 19. Residents should bundle tie and place paper along the curb for early pickup. Paper value has risen to 13.00 a ton from 9.00, with proceeds supporting scouting in the village.

Newcastle Plans Centennial Celebration for 1956
A centennial committee in Newcastle passed a motion to invite Vincent Massey to speak at the official opening on June 29 1956. The program spans June 29 to July 2 with sports parades dances and church service. J C Porter of the Bank of Commerce was named treasurer.

Prominent Orono businessman Cecil McLaren dies at 54
Cecil Steven McLaren a longtime Orono resident and lumber and coal businessman died suddenly at his home on Saturday November 12 1955 in his 55th year. He was born in Chapleau Ontario in 1900 and moved to Orono in 193? He was an elder of the Orono United Church and a former Grand Master of the Orono Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife Dora Mooney two sons Arthur and Donald a daughter Marjorie and two grandchildren. Funeral held November 14 at Orono United Church with interment in Orono Cemetery.

Mr. Percy Long of Vermilion Alberta died Monday November 7 at Monten Hospital after years as a clerk in Vermilion. Survived by wife and one married daughter. Funeral at Orone Cemetery. The notice lists several local officials and directors connected to Hastings Port Hope and area. A committee was formed to study an amplifying system for county rooms.

Monument Found East of Cobourg Traces 1792 Survey
A cut stone monument dating to 1791 1792 was uncovered three miles east of Cobourg by a survey party led by A C Winslow CO LS. The slab marks the southwest corner of Lot 35 Concession Six Haldimand Township and may have survived cedar swamp burial in the area. Local historians say it is surprising the relic wasn t ploughed or reused.
