Orono Continuation School's literary society begins term with a November 8 program. Joan Harness shares opening remarks while Ray Lunn reports on finances. Wallace Lihou debuts OaCiS edition as Beverley Payne and Joyce Cornish lead songs and readings.
Orono hosts the First Annual At Home in the town hall on Friday November 23. Tickets are $3 per couple with cards for prizes and dancing by George Garfield and his 7 piece orchestra in the auditorium. Lunch will be served at midnight. Proceeds support youth development in amateur sport.
A visitor notes 25 to 30 workers at Metallic Arts, praising the unheralded start and noting limited capital. The writer says the business has grown assets and could soon rest on a solid foundation. In Orono last Tuesday, Dane Found challenged C. T. Miller to a volley ball contest. Miller’s team defeated Found’s side three games to one after a 10 p.m. start. Miller’s lineup included L. G. McGinnis Roy Winter Neil Porter H. Frost and A. W. Ralph. Found’s team featured A. E. West C. B. Tyrrell F. O. Cooper Ed Neilson Percy Lunn and Dane Found.
A large crowd gathered in Orono to honor fallen soldiers from World War I and World War II. A parade led by the Orono Band moved from the town hall to the cemetery gates and Park Street United Church. Rev S Littlewood delivered prayers, Mrs E Hall placed the wreath, and Carlos Tamiblyn played the Last Post. The service, with the choir singing One Divine, underscored Canadians’ sacrifices and hopes for future observances.
Citizens urged to support Orono Village youth sports through a planned fundraiser on Friday evening November 1d. The Orono Amateur Athletic Association seeks funds for equipment uniforms rink time and coaching as junior members uphold a strict ethics code while enjoying social events and a 7 piece orchestra.
Ratepayers are informed that S S No 8 and No 9 Clarke Township form a new West Clarke Township School Area. At year end 1945 old trustees end and five member Township School Board will govern, elected with Township Council. Clarke Township nominations set for November 24 1945. five candidates sought. The speaker declines candidacy due to health.
Orme Gamsby will celebrate his 82nd birthday on Saturday November 17. He will be entertained by his sister Mrs Norman Rickard and his niece Mrs Ken. Werry in Newcastle. A lifelong sports enthusiast he coached many teams in baseball and hockey and remained active in fishing and boys sports.
At the November meeting the Orono Branch treasurer reported a balance of $170.50. Materials were bought for lining boys coats and hospital supplies. Members were asked to pay bills. Community tradespeople are invited to do plain sewing on linens and towels and knitting continues. Sailor boys especially need warm clothing.
A community event on November 23 promotes a social evening under a dress optional theme. Organizers invite residents to join in a refined gathering that reflects the town motto Orono is a Good Place to Live.
Durham County surpassed its Victory Loan objective in the ninth drive as Newcastle led with 282 percent and Port Hope at 170 percent. The county totals show 5 485 applications for 2 819 100 dollars against a county objective of 2 050 000 with oversubscription of 769 100. Durham County totals for the Ninth Victory Loan show 2 819 000 subscribed to Canada’s greatest Victory Loan. Newcastle led with 113 000, Clarke Township 258 000, Port Hope and Bowmanville towns and Cavan township also over the top. Port Hope’s effort neared 1 000 000 with the county proud of salesmen and results.
The Young People's Union of Park Street United Church met on Monday November 12 with Alma Hmory in charge. The meeting opened with In Flanders Fields, then a hymn, prayer and scripture. Richard Morton led the business period followed by Day Is Done. Hymn 125 and benediction closed. An invitation to armed forces youths to attend.
A thief entered Orme Gamsby’s residence and took a garden rake from the premises. The owner warns two men named Jim in Orono could handle any thieves, implying risk to the intruder. The rake owner asks for the tool’s return so leaves may be raked.
Wartime Prices and Trade Board says U S potato imports will ease shortages as Canada’s crop runs below average. An international agreement allows American potatoes to enter Canada at Canadian ceiling prices to supplement domestic supplies. Prices vary by region with 10 pound bag ceilings around 33 to 34 cents, rising slightly each month until the next crop.
