Receipts and expenditures show a balance of 208.48 on Sept 30 1946 with 554.65 in donations and socials and 1.36 in interest totaling 764.49. Committee members H W Murray C V Wilson and W J Riddell thank contributors and announce fund-raising and events including Lyric Choir Toronto concert on Nov 12 and a draw and dance on Dec 12 at Orono Town Hall.

Community Visits and Anniversary Services Highlight Weekend

Gerald and Helen Hallowell visited grandparents in Port Hope while Violet Hollingsworth from Bowmanville came with her parents. Dorothy Simpson from Toronto stayed with Alf and Perrin, and the Reid family visited Perrin’s on Sunday. Bob Hendry and family joined Rev Quigley of Bowmanville for tea, and Sid Hallowell with Harry Bandy visited Arthur Wannemaker in Wellington. Anniversary services were well attended with Rev Quickley as guest speaker, Newcastle choir performed in the afternoon and Newtonville choir in the evening.

Community Notes From Wesleyville Weekend Activities

Residents and visitors gathered for Halloween parties at several homes and school events. Boy Scout Investiture Held at United Church Orono

A goodly number attended the investiture in the United Church Sunday School Orono Tuesday evening last. Seven boys were invested as Scouts: Don McLaren, Bob Goode, Patrol Leaders Bob Hall Keith West Marvin Lunn Denny Lynch Bunny Lynch. The Girl Guides accompanied the Scouts and paraded to the church. After, games and refreshments followed.

Ontario Increases Apple Exports To United States

Ontario gains a blanket export permit for 250000 bushels of apples to the United States for 1947 48 a 40 000 bushel increase from last year 65 percent for fresh use and 35 percent for processing quota set after Canada United States Apple Committee meeting in Detroit.

Wedding of Miss Margaret Ross and Delbert Card

Miss Margaret Ross of Inverness Scotland wed Delbert Card of Lake St Peter Ontario on October 30 1947 at Orono United Church in a Robbins eye blue dress. A quiet reception followed at Col J C Gamey residence with guests from Bowmanville and overseas service ties noted.

Milk prices expected to rise two cents a quart

Agriculture Minister T. L. Kennedy said milk producers will apply to the Milk Board for an increase. He indicated consumers will pay the full rise and that the increases should take effect around November 15th, with housewives seeing the change by November 25th.

Newcastle Lions Host Halloween Party for Local Children

The Newcastle Lions Club held a Halloween Party on October 31 in the Community Hall with over seventy five children. Entertainer Bradshaw of Peterborough performed magic and moving pictures while merchants donated prizes for best costumes. Each child received a gift bag with apples oranges candy balloons and noise makers. The event kept youngsters away from mischief and provided a fun lively evening.

Woman's Missionary Society Plans for 1948 Officers and Gifts

The Woman's Missionary Society met in the Park Street Sunday School room with Mrs. Staples presiding in the absence of the president. They decided to send a barrel of apples to the Fred Victor Mission and to purchase and ship them. A nominating committee was formed to present 1948 officers. The secretary was to obtain 50 United Church calendars for Christmas sales and an invitation was extended to the Orono Auxiliary for the December Kirby Auxiliary meeting. The group then tentatively vacated the invitation.

Homemaking Club Opens In Orono With County Events

The Orono Homemaking Club launches on November 17 as part of a wide county program led by the Women’s Institute. Training schools for club leaders from Millbrook Bowmanville Tyrone Nestleton and other centres prepare girls aged 12 to 26 for activities in cooking nutrition clothing hospitality and gardening. The year ends with Achievement Day and provincial and county events including Canadian National Exhibition participation.

Health report for Northumberland Durham unit week ending Nov 1 1947

The Northumberland and Durham Health Unit reports 21 communicable disease cases for the week ending November 1 1947. Diseases include chickenpox in Clarke Township two cages and measles in Cavan Cartwright Cobourg Newcastle Port Hope Bowmanville Darlington Townships among others. The totals list 38 measles in Cobourg six in Clarke Township one in Cavan Township one in Newcastle four in Port Hope one in Bowmanville and one in Darlington Township.

Couple Receives Gifts At Wedding Celebration

Harry Worrall presented the young couple with an occasional chair on an end table and a glass water set. The bride and groom thanked friends for their kind thoughts and gifts after a sumptuous lunch. The evening concluded with chatting and informal dancing for the younger guests.

New Traffic Law for Ontario Highways

Ontario enacts automatic license and vehicle permit suspensions for offenders under the Highway Traffic Act. Since July 1 1947, about 200 motorists faced suspensions for offenses causing accidents, with 44 careless driving convictions. Officials note fewer drunk-driving convictions and urge constant caution to cut traffic tolls.
