Costumes Galore At Orono Masquerade Ball

Orono firemen hosted a Masquerade Ball at the Town Hall drawing about eighty couples in a wide range of costumes. Prizes went to Willis Barraball and Marilyn Cobbledick as a hunter pairing with a dog, and A McGill as a scarecrow. Marilyn King and John Galbraith earned top prizes as jailbirds. Revelaires provided music for round and square dancing as Halloween decor and spot dances energized the evening.

Orono High School Glee Club Plans Musical Night

Orono High School Glee Club revives itself at the school and schedules a Musical Night at the Orono Town Hall around late November. The program will feature the Glee Club, the Orono Band, and various solo vocal numbers under director Mrs. F. A. Fletcher.

Heather Rebekah Lodge Plans Events and Meetings

The Heather Rebekah Lodge held its regular meeting at 1.0.C.F. Hall with Sister Betty Major presiding in place of the absent Noble Grand. Plans were set for a November 7 official visit to Oshawa No. 3 Lodge and a November 9 school of instruction at Orono 1.0.O.F. Hall with a district banquet honoring Sister Helen Bowman.

Mission Band Plans Christmas Party for Leskard Group

The Orono United Church Mission Band met with thirty five members present. The group discussed inviting Leskard children to a Christmas party and decided to purchase one hundred calendars for members. A social hour followed with gifts, cake, and a red rose bouquet.

Orono Public School Holds Graduation Exercises

The Orono Public School will hold graduation exercises on November 8 in the Orono Town Hall. The 1960 61 diplomas will be awarded to successful students of both grade six and eight. The program starts at eight o clock with guest speaker Mr James Rickaby of Orono speaking on new guidance in the Elementary Schools of Ontario. Parents and the public are invited.

Township Home Destroyed By Fire

Fire swept through a frame house northeast of Kendal in Clarke Township last Thursday morning destroying the residence owned by Mr and Mrs Joe Jarczynski. Not occupied at the time, the blaze was first noticed by Jarczynski as smoke poured from the upstairs. The house, built about forty to fifty years ago, formerly belonged to W Langstaff.

Accidents Involve Local Residents

Several local residents were hurt in a series of vehicle incidents this week. Alvin Wilson of Kendal lost control on a county road, damaging his car and suffering facial injuries. A second crash near Tyrone road injured Mrs. Dane Found and Mrs. Wm. Found, with both cars sustaining front-end damage.

Budget Time For God Work Address At Ishiawa Presbytery

Mrs. W. E. Howard of Toronto spoke at the Ishiawa Presbytery Woman's Association Semi Annual meeting held at Albert Street United Church. She outlined tasks for home, community, world, and church, urging careful budgeting of time for God's work and praising high ideals. The event featured a luncheon and tributes to long-serving members.

Clarke township teachers discuss fall inspection at Brown's School

The Clarke township teachers met October 23 near Niagara Falls to review the fall inspection. The day long event featured speakers on science and guidance, with critiques from area teachers. A Junior Gardener meeting October 26 included a Nativity Scene by Mrs. Fairbrother and others and plans for Christmas decorations and a dining table class for eight and nine year olds.

Halloween Night Pranks Prompt Early Fire Call

Boisterous Halloween crowds roamed door to door then faded into the night. A pumpkin toss shattered a Main Street window at Harvey Partner’s and another at Ervan Rainey’s. At four the Orono fire department extinguished a buggy blaze and multiple tires in Mill Hill hollow. Eleven of twelve firemen responded.

Eunice Gilchrist Weds Oren Malley in Orono Church

Eunice Gilchrist daughter of the late Mina Lane and Fred Lane of Bowmanville married Oren Malley son of Mr and Mrs William Malley of Orono at Orono United Church. Rev Basil Long officiated. The couple will reside in Oshawa after a Niagara Falls honeymoon.

Herefords Averaged High At Ontario Breeders Sale

Thirty five Herefords averaged 318.00 at the Ontario breeders sale held Saturday at Morrow Park. Eleven bulls averaged 408.60 and eleven cows with calves 473.30. Top bull price was 510 paid to Norman McLeod by Robert Mayhew, who led eight other offerings for 2670 total. A bull at 440 came from Dr. Charlotte M. Horner.

County planning boards eyed at workshop in Compung

John Pearson of the Department of Municipal Affairs outlined costs and benefits of a county planning organization at the United Counties planning workshop in Compung. About 75 delegates from 18 of 24 counties attended as Pearson and Keith Bain answered questions on board functions and joint planning options.
