Orono United Church Centennial Celebrations Highlight Village History

The Orono United Church observed its centennial with a weekend of events. Former ministers spoke at two Sunday services. a centennial smorgasbord, an amateur show, and photos tracing church and community life since 1865 drew crowds. The choir, soloists, and high school groups performed, and messages of congratulations were delivered by Rev White and Rev Long.

Orono Amateur Hockey Appoints Coaches And Teams

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association outlines Bantam league entries with Orono Zion Ajax southward Bowmansville and St Gregory's Oshawa. Additional Port Hope entry possible. All games in Orono and Newcastle rinks start December 15 if weather permits. Eleven village boys joined. home games Fridays 7 to 8, Newcastle games Saturdays 6 to 8. Four teams sponsored Atoms Pee Wees Bantams and Midgets with appointed coaches and managers for each. Registration this weekend at Orono Community Centre.

Local Deer Hunt Opens Three Day Season in Counties

An open deer season runs Monday through Wednesday in United Counties and Clarke Township. Shotguns only are allowed. rifles are prohibited. A valid deer licence is required.

Deer Hunters Asked to Aid Ontario Survey on Leptospira in Deer

The Division of Zoonoses and Diseases of Wildlife at the Ontario Veterinary College seeks blood samples from deer shot during hunting season and fresh kidneys when possible. They target Durham and Northumberland agricultural areas and request hunters to package specimens in bottles and bags for pickup. Kidney samples must be collected promptly.

Kendal Teams Among Trophy Holders

The Lake shore Minor Baseball Association banquet at Elmhurst Hotel New Castle on October 26 honored Kendal and Cobourg teams with trophies. Delegates named include Murray Bates, Ned Foster, Jack Ryan, and C. R. Carveth with backups Blake Gunter, Jack Thompson, and Ted Watts Sr. Special praise to Jack Ryan and the Bantam Ontario champions.

Recording Secretary read minutes while treasurer was absent. Members discussed attending the C G I T Vesper Service in Oshawa and planned smocking lessons at Mrs Armstrong’s home next week. Weather caused a late start with taps and knitting activity. Peggy Hancock and Mrs Armstrong were noted as unavailable.

Digs Wolf Out of Den Nets Bounty

Three area residents Don Lycett Doug Lycett and Milton Wannan dug for three hours near a Christmas tree plantation east of Enterprise to capture a young female wolf. Deputy game warden Doug Powell assisted. The county bounty totaled 50.66 dollars confirming wolf sightings and livestock damage concerns.

Durham Co OPSU Medical Plans Reshape Coverages and Rates

Durham County Co operative Medical Services approves merging three plans into a three part package with compulsory enrollment. A semi package costs 60 and the full package 115 including Home and Office calls. deductibles drop from 200 to 100. A 10 percent rate cut applies to Surgical and Major Medical for prior policies.

Centennial Amateur Contest at Orono United Church

About 250 people joined the Centennial celebration at Orono United Church basement. The event featured the Orono Players one act play Between the Soup and the Savoury, performances by Gladys Aslett and others, a piano-led sing song, The Scarlet Dancers, and multiple musical numbers from diverse local groups. The program included recitations, trombone, violin solos, tap dancing, and choral renditions, concluding with the Don't Give Up The... number.

Junior Gardeners Enter Pumpkins In Contest

The Junior Gardener's Club met with 18 members on October 25. They entered 12 pumpkins in the decorating class and named prizes for Pink Lady Carol Ann Caldwell Old Man Eivelene Brown Chinaman Margaret Mitchell with honorable mentions Annette Jorgenson and Bill Caldwell. A special workshop is planned November 8 to prepare costumes for Bowmanville Santa Claus parade and the club will enter a float with Kiwanis supplying a tractor and wagon. The meeting noted a Christmas party November 22 and a program to be led by Clive and Caroline Johnson and Mrs Challice, with geranium cuttings given to each member. The Orono United Church centennial week end concert raised over one hundred dollars.
