Orono Police Trustees Discuss Industrial Expansion Plans

The Orono Police Trustees met to discuss assistance to two industriesone seeks 4000 extra square feet expansion and the other has signed an offer for land for a new factory. Local financing and a special committee are to meet again for more details while a health department letter advised against using Millson Hill Street land for a residence.

Reverend Dr moment obituary for Crescent Avenue Church leader

The Rev Dr J J Moment of 2 Crabapple Lane Plainfield New York died May 10 after a long illness at age 84. Born in Ontario he studied at Princeton and Hartford Seminary and served Crescent Avenue Church Plainfield for 30 years. He wrote hymns and oratorios and enjoyed poetry music woodwork and bird watching. He leaves a wife two daughters a son seven grandchildren and siblings.

Oreno Fair Drama Festival Draws Six Entries

Oreno Fair Drama Festival in Oreno Town Hall on September 17 and 12 lists six entries including Knox Church Group Peterborough All Saints Church Group Peterborough Community Theatre a Toronto group directed by Miss Ronne Kay and another from Oshawa led by Mr Russell Flutter plus the Orono Players with Miss Madeline Tooley as guest director. A professional adjudicator Mr Janus Dean head of the drama department at Central Technical School Toronto and president of the Provincial Drama Council of Ontario will judge.

Colvin Bullock Nuptials At Orono United Church

Marvin Edwin Colvin and Elizabeth Jane Bullock wed at Orono United Church with Rev Basil Long officiating. Guests came from Bancroft Brantford Toronto London Stratford Peterborough Acton and Lakefield. The couple will reside in Oshawa after a wedding trip to eastern Canada.

The May meeting of the Women s Christian Temperance Union was led by Mrs Walsh in the Sunday School Auditorium. Mrs Allin delivered a devotional on Prayer and Mrs Rowe reported on the County Convention in Oshawa. Mrs Perigoe spoke as guest. Mrs Walsh received a life membership pin from the Provincial Association.

Death of Orono businessman Leroy Hamilton April 7

Leroy Hamilton a prominent Orono businessman died at Memorial Hospital Bowmanville Ont after a brief illness. Born Glen Allen Wellington County Ont he moved to Toronto in 1895 and later worked in mortgage real estate insurance and securities. He promoted gold mines in Northern Ontario before settling in Orono to run a growing insurance business. He leaves widow Sadie Hamilton brother Judge Frank Hamilton Winnipeg and Myr Wilbert Hamilton Seattle.

Orono Park Board Revises Sunday Admission Fees

The Orono Park Board met Monday night to set summer plans including raising Sunday admission from 25 to 50 cents for non residents beyond a four mile radius. Residents within four miles may buy a Sunday season ticket for one dollar. They plan posts to mark parking areas, replaster the pool, repair the pool walk, fix a large children’s slide, add picnic tables, and install two new footbridges over the creek.

Orono Pee Wees and Juniors See Action in Local Leagues

Orono hosts nightly baseball and softball at Orono Park with six teams including two girls teams and multiple divisions. PeeWees beat Cobourg Training School 24 to 15 in ten innings as Ralph Kennedy fanned 15 in seven. Grant Yeo also starred for Orono as the Cobourg rally faltered after a five run first inning. Six entrants vie for Miss Orono title with finalists chosen for a live CHCH TV telecast in Hamilton. Lynda Tyrrell of Orono leads contenders toward a Britain trip and cash prize, while Miss Orono crown events unfold June 5 at Orono Town Hall with local judges and music.

Tulips Color Beds On Station Street Enhance Town

Tulips brighten the Horticultural flower beds on Station Street this spring. The blooms come from bulbs planted last fall by the local association and purchased by the Orono Police Trustees. During the week the two beds were cleaned up and greatly improve the area’s appearance.

Orono Hydro Bids On Aerial Ladder

Orono Hydro Commissioners supported their manager's bid to purchase a second hand aerial ladder from the Orangeville Hydro Commission for 450 dollars to mount on the current Hydro Truck. The manager noted its usefulness in hydro work and said four office help applications have been received. Accounts totaling 2216 dollars and 59 cents were approved for payment.

Evening Auxiliary Meeting Highlights Guest Speaker

The Evening Auxiliary met May 21 in the Sunday School Auditorium. Dorothy Watt opened with a reading on Guidance and Edith Sherwin led a meditation on Community Fellowship. Jim Rickaby, a teacher at Sunnyview School for the deaf in Toronto, spoke about his training in England and new hearing aid methods. The group discussed Tuberculosis Association Mass Survey and roles for a July wedding catering.
