Fireworks And Band Shine At Orono Victoria Day Event

Orono Victoria Day celebration at Durham Central Exhibition grounds drew crowds in cars and on-site attendees. The Orono Band performed marches overtures waltz and fox trot while the Orono Firefighters ran the fireworks display which doubled last year. Cubs raised funds totaling about 150 dollars with donors on the night. chamber of commerce bears a 50 dollar shortfall before covering costs.

Recognition Week for Ontario 4-H Members Set

Ontario Agriculture announces a 4-H Club Leadership Week at Ontario Agricultural College during the week of July 27. Each county and district may select one 4-H boy aged 16 by November 1 based on participation, inter club competition, and community work.

Park Games Schedule for Local Youth Teams

Minor games at the park next week include PeeWees Cobourg School versus Orono tonight. On May 22 Bowmanville faces Orono in girls softball. May 25 Newcastle meets Orono in juveniles. May 27 Cobourg Bantams meet Cobourg at Orono. May 28 PeeWees Copourg play at Orono.

Local Association Plans Fundraising Talent Drive

The Local Association of Girl Guides met May 14 at Alice Cobbledick’s home with seven members. President Kit Linton led with a Guide prayer, read prior minutes, and heard treasurer Alice Cobbledick’s report. A Building Fund to build new headquarters in Toronto, dubbed Indies for Sale, was highlighted, with members urged to save odd change and raise funds. The Golden Jubilee next year will feature yellow Holland tulips planted across Canada. Two seven day Guide Camps are planned, and members agreed to generate talent money locally through small fundraisers.

The May W A meeting at United Church Sunday School room had 15 ladies. President Mrs H Allen led prayers, Mrs George Carson spoke, and notes from members were read. A supper was scheduled for Wednesday evening June 24 with details to follow.

Improvements To Two Hall In Orono

Interior renovation of the Township Hall in Orono continues with focus on the stage. Walls around the stage are removed for draped sides, a new hardwood floor laid, upcoming repainting planned for hall and stage, and a new fire escape added at the east exit.

Colt Derby at Orono Racecourse Draws 28 Entries

Orono Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Colt Derby at Orono Raceway on June 20 with 28 horses entered. The event aims to become an annual Orono fixture, offering a special trophy and cash prizes. Two classified races accompany the main event, with racing starting at two o clock for an entertaining afternoon.

Fire destroys two barns and livestock on Powell farm

A Monday fire of undetermined origin caused about 25 thousand dollars damage on Sam Powell's Clarke Township farm south of Morgan's Corners. The blaze gutted a large bank barn and pig barn, killing 27 cattle, 30 pigs, and a horse.

The Orono girls played Bethany in an 18 to 16 exhibition at Bethany on May 18. Millbrook defends league title. five teams compete with Newcastle and Newtonville withdrawing. Schedule lists May 20 to June 16 games. home opener set for May 22 at Orono park. A fire destroyed threshing machinery, hay baler, mower, seed drill, binder, hay, and about 500 worth of grain.

Britannia to Sail Great Lakes on Royal Tour

The Royal Yacht Britannia will voyage the St Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes this summer, adding almost 3,000 miles to its 100,000-mile record. Built in 1953, the 5,769-ton vessel carries Royal Family members on state visits and can convert into a naval hospital ship if needed.

Clarke Township Approves Debentures for Two 2-Room Schools

At a special meeting Clarke Township Council passed by law 1321 for issuing 75000 to construct two 2-room schools at Newtonville and Lockhart. After three readings it goes to the Ontario Municipal Board for approval before final adoption. The council also reviews building regulations with the County Consultant Committee and authorizes drafting a new Building By-law.

Bantams Win Opening Game At Orono Park

The Orono Bantam baseball club beat Courtice 18 to 17 in a high scoring opener at Orono Park Wednesday evening. Ralph Kennedy Gary McMackin and Larry Miller pitched. Wayne Kennedy was behind the plate. John Glenney Craig Hinds and Grant Greenwood led hitting. The team were short of some players but will have them back next game with a practice planned for Saturday. The Bantams are for players 15 and under as of May 1. The Drone Club this year is coached by Phil Long and Jim Tamblyn.

The Orono Baseball Club presents a 1958 financial statement with a balance from 1957 of 16.83 and total receipts of 1218.43. The report lists numerous expenditures including game proceeds, uniforms, wages, ground work, advertising, and service charges, ending with a year-end balance of 2.76 and a total of 921.77.

Water Resources Inspect Private Sewage Disposal Systems

Northumberland and Durham health report notes Ontario Water Resources Commission inspections of private sewage disposal points along water courses. 93 communicable disease cases in April including 40 chickenpox and 24 red measles. two rabies cases in Northumberland. four new tuberculosis cases. 680 children completed immunization series. Nursing staff delivered 481 home visits. prenatal classes held in Brampton, Cobourg, Port Hope and Bowmanville.
