Victory Loan tribute from National War Finance Committee

Horticultural Society Plans Victory Garden Contest

The Horticultural Society will host a Victory Garden contest open to all members who register with the secretary before June 1. Gardens must have at least six vegetable varieties and be judged by two impartial judges on appearance and quality. At least four entries required. prizes are 5 dollars for first, 3 for second, and 2 for third. The first inspection occurs near the end of June, with judging to follow.

It notes Wm Low’s ankle injury from a horse incident after a week with relatives. A temperance sermon followed by prayer services marked VE day and the community anticipates a new minister, Rev L B Smith, taking charge in July.

Orono Cadets Stage Impressive May Inspection

Orono Continuation School hosted the Cadet Inspection on May 11 with Carman Cornish commanding the corps and Mont Richardson as 2IC. Major T C Holmes led the salute at the saluting base as cadets and a girls platoon paraded and drilled. The event ended with ropework tests and a softball tournament followed by a weiner roast.

Dedications Mark Orono Masonry Milestone in 1945

On May 10 1945 M Wor Bro T C Wardley Grand Master officially opened and dedicated the new Masonic Temple in Orono transforming the former Presbyterian Church on Centre Street. The gathering praised Masonry's teachings as applied to modern life with toasts speeches and a meal at the Town Hall. The altar from the old church was consecrated for Masonry and a watercolor presented to Rt Wor Bro O W Rolph for coordinating the project.

Durham County Tops Loan Drive with Strong Final Push

Durham County closed the Victory Loan with sales likely exceeding 1.9 million dollars against a 1.65 million goal. Clarke Township and Newcastle alone added 246,200, led by Hope Township with 221,450, and Port Hope 587,150 overall. Final tallies show mixed results across districts and emphasis on continuing war-run expenses despite Europe’s end.
