Clarke Township appoints road clerk and land official
At a special Clarke Township Council meeting Henry DeWith of Bowmanville was named Road Clerk effective May 17 with a 4000 annual salary. Lyall Lowery was also appointed to oversee land acquisitions for current road projects. Six tenders for the Township Road Department building were opened. Wm. D. Winter Ltd of Whitby submitted the lowest bid at 44400. A supplementary road bylaw of 12500 was approved for later Departmental Board approval. Weller Tree Experts were awarded the Hallowell bridge construction contract.

72 Hour Pumping Test at Mill Street Well
A continuous seventy two hour pumping test is under way at the municipal well on Mill Street. Started Monday afternoon, it will run day and night until Thursday afternoon to determine the well’s perennial yield. The pump delivers a constant output during the test.

Junior Gardeners Hike Weekend Nature Hunt
On Saturday May 8 twenty seven Junior Gardeners and four leaders hiked at 10 in damp misty weather. They hunted for nature treasures including pebbles fungi moss and fossil stones before reaching Orono Park for lunch. Judging followed with awards for odd shaped wood won by Kathy Grady Julie Schmid and Gay Quinton.

Spring Flower Show Prep and School Board Actions
Mrs Fairbrother announced entries for the Spring Flower show on May 27 and a June 26 decoration sale. The meeting covered Junior Gardeners’ plot work at Main and Mill, shrub purchases, and a Clarke Township school board with new principals for Orono and Kendal. The Antioch School faces closure. Clarke School Field Day Highlights District Meet
Clarke School hosts Lakeshore District Track and Field Meet with schools from Dunbarton to Trenton.
