Clarke Township Council Orders Thirty Day Employee Notice

In a regular meeting the Clarke Township Council passed a resolution giving all employees thirty days notice of resignation. The move followed disputes over hall charges and caretaker duties, with Deputy Reeve Brown and Councillor Lovekin backing the action. Roads superintendent reports were defended as satisfactory by the official and Provincial Engineer Marsden.

Junior Farmers Report From Un Prov Conference In Orono

Durham County Junior Farmers Association held its April meeting at Orono Town Hall. Gerald Brown reported on the Provincial Conference to four delegates. Council discussed road repairs, a petition against a Sale Barn, oiling streets, and a five ton road truck purchase.

Orono Fish and Hunt Club Holds May Session

More than twenty members and juniors met in Orange Hall for the May meeting. Films on Rideau Canal boat trips and ringed neck pheasant were shown. The club planned conservation work on Don Hamm property and a trout habitat project starting that evening. A smelt fry and pan fish derby were scheduled, with firearms instruction for boys and a fair display at the Orono Fair in September.

Trout Fishing Opening Reels in County Streams

The trout season opened with large crowds as fishermen sought rainbow and brown trout. Game warden Ken Tolmie reports generally exceptional catches across the county with Wilmot Creek and Ganaraska areas yielding good results. Violations for undersized fish and out of season fishing led to six seizures and fines.

Red Shield Campaign Opens In Orono This Monday

The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal runs in Orono from May 10 to May 28. Local chairman Mrs. J C Gamey leads a well organized drive. Lieut. John Ham notes about $1000 spent in Bowmanville and district on family welfare and relief. The appeal funds welfare services locally and nationally.

Orono Cubs to Stage Friday Night Variety Show

The Orono Cubs present a Friday evening variety program at Orono Town Hall with solos by Carolyn Jones and Bonnie Adams, piano and violin pieces, a trumpet solo by Russell Major, and a Cartoons and skits including Dragnet. Tickets from any Cub or at the door. proceeds fund Cub activities and a weekend camping trip for boys.

Urge for Free Chest X Rays to Curb TB in Clarke Township

Clarke Township residents are invited to a free chest X ray clinic next Monday. Volunteers have distributed cards to individuals aged 12 and over. high school students will be scanned at their schools. Results are confidential, with only the family physician notified. The Tuberculosis Association of Durham and Northumberland Counties sponsors the event, funded by Red Seal donations, with other clinics acceptable and times listed on the back of cards.

The After noon Auxiliary of the WMS met with Mrs. Drummond presiding. Music by Mrs. Staples and a service themed The coming of the Holy Spirit. Secretary read prior minutes. four percent visits noted. Chapter study by Mrs. Tamblyn discussed Europe's struggles and relief efforts.

Cub Father And Son Night Draws Near-Record Turnout

The Orono Cubs held a Father and Son Banquet at the United church on Friday evening with close to one hundred attendees. Cub masters and mothers organized the event which featured displays of projects from toy making to nature collections and a menu including turkey and pie. Guest speaker Mr Akers of Oshawa emphasized sportsmanship and youth education through cubbing and scouting, praising local leaders and urging parental support for future packs.
