A Friday morning blaze on Robert Moffat’s farm east of Orono destroyed the barn and nearly all livestock including five horses, twenty three cows and sixteen young pigs. The Orono Fire Department aided in saving the house as winds drove flames and sparks. loss estimated at 10000 to 12000 with some insurance.
Mrs Laura Ethel Brown Wood died at Oshawa General Hospital on April 25 after a nine day illness. She was 56 and widow of Fred S. Wood. Born May 3, 1888 in Clarke Township, she lived in Clarke Township Orono and Oshawa. Survived by husband two daughters Lois Wilbur Taunton Lenore Wood and two sons James Orono Ross Oshawa. two sisters and two brothers and three grandchildren. Funeral at Park Street United Church Orono on April 27 with Rev Littlewood. interment in Orono Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.
Park Street United Church unit met April 29 led by Ruth Goode with Wilda Hooey reading scripture and Lilian Hale presenting a poem. Members divided into three groups to illustrate The Prodigal Son, The Good Samaritan, and The Sow er in staged drawings, then an offering was received and Benediction given. The National Film Board note follows.
Park Street United Church’s Adult Bible Class held an Easter supper and programme in the Sunday School room with the pastor as chairman. The event featured readings, prayers, piano solos, duets, accordion music, and a historical reading from fifty years ago, ending with the national anthem.
The Metallic Art Products Limited replaces the former firm after a recent meeting in Kumrite Apartments electing R. R. Waddell as president E. R. Woodyard as vice president Col J. C. Gamey as managing director and Percy Lunn and Hol. Neilson as directors. The plant plans to restart mat production and fulfill orders for Eaton's Simpson's and other firms while securing aluminum and copper supplies to resume full operations.
Ontario's severe farm labor shortage spurs the Farm Service Force under director Alex Maclaren to rally non student workers. Camps for boys and girls open mid April at Beamsville Winona Vineland Burlington Leamington and Harrow with the YMCA supervision. Registration urged at 112 College Street for farm help through the season with attractive pay offered.
A Port Hope executive meeting for the Lakeshore Juvenile B Hard Ball League failed to assemble last Friday evening leaving the group without a quorum and no decisions. The report notes ongoing issues delaying league organization and schedule arrangements.
Belleville, Apr 22 1946 F B White Newcastle Ont retires as section foreman on the C M J R after 28 years service 27 as foreman. Roadmaster’s address thanks him for capable service and wishes happiness in retirement. Companions present a purse of money to honor his work.
Le Roy G. Brown of Ontario County becomes acting agricultural representative for Huron County with headquarters at Clinton due to the illness of F. K. B. Stewart. The Inter national Plowing Match in Huron this fall prompted the appointment, effective May 1. Brown, a former RC AIF officer, is a native of Orone Durham County.
The note lists May ration dates for butter meat sugar and canning sugar with codes M and S and values. It states the first allotment of canning sugar coupons becomes valid on May 2 and the second on July 4. S coupons cover maple syrup in May, with 80 months ounces?
No teams entered from Bowmanville and Port Hope, and Cobourg joins Peter borough league only after no district league could be formed, leaving the executive disbanded for this year at least.
