4-H Club Achievement Day Held in Orono

Thirty four 4-H Homemaking Club members completed the Cotton Accessories for the Club Girl's Bedroom project in Orono on April 26. The Achievement Day for four Durham County communities featured exhibits including cotton dresser scarves chair pads bed spreads and waste paper baskets. Certificates of Achievement were awarded to several girls who completed multiple projects, with provincial honours and county pins for top achievers presented by local institute presidents.

Annual Presbytery W A Meet Held In Newcastle

The Newcastle presbytery Woman's Association held its annual meeting with Mrs E D Cornish of Northminster United Church Oshawa installed as president. Officers and committee chairmen were announced and a fall rally was set for Albert Street Church October 24. The memorial service honored 72 members, and Rev M C Fisher and others spoke on the work of women in the church.

Orono Fire Department Contains Mattress Fire at Tolmie Home

The Orono Fire Department answered a call shortly after five. A mattress in an upstairs bedroom ignited smoke throughout the house but was quickly controlled with gas masks. The mattress burned largely, with smoke causing most damage and the mattress tossed from a window.

Oddfellows And Air Cadets Attend Devine Service

Oddfellows and Air Cadets join a Sunday service at Orono United Church. A joint parade along Church and Main Streets followed led by the Orono Band. Gerald Shackleton led the responsive reading while R J Taggart read the scripture. The minister spoke on friendship love and truth, and Citizenship tied to cadets.

Clarke Township votes two readings on withdrawal by law

A public meeting in Clarke Township heard support and opposition to three school sections seeking to withdraw from the Township Public School Area. Council gave the by law two readings with a final reading planned for May in Orono before sending the petition to the Ontario Department of Education for approval. Many expect the three schools to operate independently if approved.

Gardiner to Speak in Orono Friday Night

James G. Gardner federal minister of agriculture will be guest speaker at a public meeting in Township Hall Orono this Friday evening May 3 at 9 00 sponsored by the Durham County Liberal Association. Liberal candidate John M James also on the program.

Orono Fire Dept Demonstrates Auxiliary Pumper

The Orono Fire Department and Police Trustees observed a portable auxiliary pumper in action at a creek and hall demonstration. The unit proved effective as standalone and when feeding the Orono pumper, with a 584 dollar complete setup and 183 dollar self contained oxygen mask. Trustees will review the pumper purchase at the next budget meeting.

Dr Vivian and Progressive Conservative leader John Diefenbaker addressed nearly 600 at the Newcastle Community Hall in Durham. Speakers criticized Liberal policy on equalized payments and constitutional protections, urging Ottawa to empower Ontario and defend parliamentary rights.

Orono Fish and Hunt Club Dance Draw Drawn

The Orono Fish and Hunt Club held its annual dance in the Township Hall Orono on Friday evening with about seventy five attendees. Local musicians including James Lowery Max and Lloyd Ransberry provided music for round and square dancing. A later draw awarded three prizes a spinning rod and reel to Nile Rowey Bowmanville a fly rod to Ernie Bowen Orono and a reel to Murray Vennor Oshawa.

10th Anniversary of Newcastle Lions Club Celebrated

Close to one hundred twenty attended the Tenth Anniversary and Ladies Night of the Newcastle Lions Club held at Orono Odd Fellows Hall. District Governor Jim Johns and Deputy Governor Dean Goddard spoke praise for a decade of club work. Lion President Brenton Rickard and Charter President Pete Hare chaired the event. Kendal United Church women catered a turkey banquet. Guests enjoyed toasts and entertainment from Brantford performers.

Diefenbaker Outlines Agriculture Labour Policies

John Diefenbaker, leader of the Progressive Conservative party, spoke to 550 supporters at a Newcastle community hall addressing agriculture policy. He urged a flexible price-support formula, early parity with fair prices, expansion of foreign markets, and revised labour conciliation laws to aid Canadian workers.
