Town Hall Orono March 26 meeting outlines a committee plan to host a township wide public reception for service personnel. The drive seeks 3000 dollars from citizens and notes local committee members will serve without pay. It highlights loyalty support and civic duty. The Wo men's Association held its March meeting last Tuesday afternoon with fourteen ladies present led by President Mrs Tamblyn. Devotional by Mrs Littlewood themed God Leads. Reports praised social success and April planned social evening. Programmes featured Young Women's Bible Class, musical numbers by Mrs Plummond and readings by Mrs Walsh.
Diphtheria inoculations will be given in Clarke Township schools on March 21, 1946. The 2nd and 3rd doses follow in three and six weeks. Locations include Clarke No. 8 at 9.00 a.m., Clarke No. 19 at 10.00 a.m., and Clarke No. 22 at 11.00 a.m.
Fifty six boys from seven counties competed in the Quinte Seed Judging Competition in Napanee on March 15. Durham County won the Wardens Trophy for the sixteenth year with 2298 points, Ontario County second with 2237. top three from each county formed teams. Prize winners included Stuart Dorrell, Harold Forder, and Murray Osborne for Durham, with cash prizes and two bushels of registered seed for each winning team member.
The ashes of an unknown Canadian soldier are to be buried beside fallen comrades in the Canadian section of an Imperial War Graves Cemetery near Falaise. Honorary Major John W. Foote VC will transport the remains from Halifax aboard the liner De France on March 20 and oversee the solemn ceremony.
Sportsmen and anglers are invited to a town hall meeting in Orontes to form a central body uniting local Fish and Hunt Clubs in Durham County. The aim is to gain greater concessions than individual clubs can secure. The meeting is set for Tuesday evening March 26 at 8 p.m.
Dr G W Miller spoke at Clarke Union Home and School Club on health education for rural areas. He praised preventive medicine advances and noted DDT discoveries, warned against blanket quarantining for measles, and anticipated limits on Scarlet Fever serum. He outlined county Health Unit plans and future community benefits.
Canada will issue a new ration book number 6 in early fall to replace expiring meat and sugar coupons. O W Rodemar, wartime prices and trade board administrator, cites ongoing world food shortages and Canada’s role in aiding starving abroad. Distribution will follow the existing system with thousands of volunteers at 627 Local Ration Boards nationwide.
On Wednesday March 1 the Horticultural Society held a basket social in Orange Hall Orono with music singing and a showcase of pictures by C R Carveth of Newcastle. Auctioneer E J Hamm oversaw basket sales while Miss Lillian Hales basket won first prize and K W E Davey paid the top price.
Around four hundred attended the Orono Continuation School commencement in the town hall on Friday evening March 15. The program ran three and a half hours with songs, dances, a gymnastic display, and a three act play The Haunted Tea Room starring Reid Harness and others. Awards and diplomas were presented to numerous pupils by staff and local patrons.
Margaret Elizabeth McElroy 19 of Peterborough died from injuries after her bicycle collided with a transport trailer on Charlotte Street. Blake McNaughton faces reckless driving charges with bail set at 4000 dollars. Funeral held at A Comstock and Sons with interment at Orono Cemetery.
Wartime Food Corporation officials in Toronto announced that large size top grade potatoes from Minnesota and North Dakota will enter Ontario to aid Canada's potato shortage. The import extends a previous U S agreement and replaces the smaller size B potatoes from Maine and Michigan. Canada has imported 7000 cars of potatoes from the United States so far to ease the domestic supply.
Clarke Township reception committee plans a banquet for returned men and women at the Armouries Orono with a post event program in the Town Hall. A community drive seeks subscriptions totaling at least 3000 dollars, deadline April 15 1946, with committees named for district canvassing across the township.
