Clarke Township Council Appoints Road Superintendent

Clarke Township Council met March 2 with full attendance. The meeting approved minutes and correspondence, planned a Toronto meeting March 10 on Lake Short erosion, granted a tag day May 8 for the Canadian Institute for the Blind, approved roadside danger signs near school No. 15, and formed committees to study township development and snow fence needs.

Farm Forum Obseserved Activities And Council Resolutions

Local events include Farm Forum discussions on Soil Conservation and The Benefit of Machinery to the Farmer at the Best and Arnold Thorndyke homes. A Red Cross tea finished a quilt. Young People’s Union held a weekly meeting. church services featured Dr. Oke and sermons on The Saviour’s Love. Township council passed resolutions on road work, cemetery inspections, hospital funds, and road diversions ahead of a 1948 April meeting.

Clarke Township Plans 100th Anniversary in 1950

At the Clarke Township Council meeting the reeve and clerk were tasked to assemble a history for the hundredth anniversary in 1950. A committee will consult the Orono Chamber of Commerce on upgrading the township hall, adding a library and toilets, and possibly erecting a township office. The Antioch Forum proposes leveling roadside weeds to help farmers and foster local cooperation.

Moving Pictures Taken At Orono Skating Club Carnival

The Orono Skating Club capped weeks of practice with a cinema day as Mrs. Armstrong filmed the Girls in action. The event featured the Dutch girls Penguins Bunnies Rooster and chicks in solos and duets. Afterwards Mis Ken Gamsby hosted hot dogs cakes and a chocolate treat from Mr. Stark, sparking plans for more skaters next year.

Health unit weekly report shows 57 cases of communicable diseases for the week ending March 6 1948. Cases include chickenpox in Cartwright and Newcastle measles in Newcastle and Brighton Township mumps in Cramahe and Darlington townships, scarlet fever in Clarke Township and Port Hope totals. Secondary concentrations appear in Mur ray and Percy townships and surrounding areas.

Rev Andrew McLaughlin Passes in Belleville Hospital

Reverend Andrew McLaughlin B A B D died Friday night February 26 1948 in Belleville General Hospital after months of declining health. He did extensive religious press reporting and covered church affairs for the Peterboro Examiner. He was known in the Bay of Quinte Conference and once led the Pontypool Circuit. his wife is the daughter of Rev Wesley Down, formerly of the Newtonville Circuit.

Leskard Congregational Party Welcomes Rev Hustace

A gathering of over a hundred members was held Monday at Leskard school to introduce Rev A E and Mrs Hustace to the community. Games and erokinole followed by a bountiful lunch. Harry Davey introduced the minister and wife to attendees. Church services are every other Sunday at 2 PM.

Red Cross Seeks $300 From Clarke Township

Clarke Township Red Cross asks residents to donate 300 to support continued wartime and peacetime relief. Funds fund cod liver oil capsules for schoolchildren, blood transfusion service expansion, and local welfare through school sections. Donations of 1 or more make you a member for tax receipts.

March Meeting of Park St Church Women Report

The Women's Association of Park St Church met Tuesday with good attendance. Mrs V Robinson chaired. Devotional by Miss M Davy inspired members. They approved a $25 Red Cross gift and planned a banquet for the Rebekah Lodge. Tickets sold for the play Fresh as a Daisy on April 2. An Irish program followed with songs and readings. Lunch was served.

Alberta Fern Chapman Dies at Orono at 88

Alberta Fern Chapman died suddenly at her home in Orono on February 27. She was born in Kirby in 1894, daughter of Isaac T Chapman and Louisa B Thornton, and lived on the Kirby home farm before moving to Orono fourteen years ago. She attended Kirby School and worshipped at Kirby United Church. Survived by sister Florella Welsh and brother Stanley Chapman. Funeral held March 1 at Morris Funeral Chapel Bowmanville with Rev. A B Eustace officiating.

Junior West Voted Most Valuable Player By Team

The Orono Junior Hockey group crowned Junior West as the most outstanding player of the season after a win over Whitby, with the Orono Juniors aiming to beat Newcastle again next Tuesday. Federation Of Agriculture To Form More Farm Forums

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture met at the Staples home on March 4 with strong attendance despite poor roads. Reports covered committee work and plans to form more Farm Forums, organize by school sections, and hold more frequent meetings in uncovered parts of the county. The federation approved its provincial quota payment and discussed seed potatoes for Garden Hill, plus a note of sympathy for Mrs. Russell White. The next meeting is set for April 1, 1948, at the Heyland home.
