Winners at Athletic Millbrook Rewarded Short Course Banquet

The Durham Short Courses on Agriculture and Home Economics closed with a Feb 25 banquet in Orono town hall attended by about 150 students and guests. Speeches praised youth, government training programs, and the value of agriculture for Canada's future.

Good Roads Conven tion Addressed by Ontario Minister

Hon. P. M. Dewan Ontario Minister of Agriculture spoke at the Good Roads Convention in Toronto last week stressing that good country roads support rural welfare and agricultural prosperity. He traced road policy from 1896, noting 8 000 miles of county roads and 7 00 miles of provincial highways, and cited 9 208 truck inspections from August to December 1936. He urged snow removal on local roads and noted the shift away from driving horses in years past.

Oshawa Teams Dominate Local Hockey Weekend

Fred Lycett's Public School team of Oshawa beat Orono 8 to 6 as Orono rested regulars. The Bowmanville Midgets defeated the local Midget squad 8 to 1 at the arena. Newcastle Midgets tied Newtonville 5 all in a wide open game. Oshawa Orioles edged a mixed Orono-Newcastle selection 5 to 4 in a close affair. Milk-Maids and Major's Milk Shakes played to a 6 all tie led by K Neale and R Goode with strong goaltending from Tamblyn.

Shields and Medals Presented To Pupils At Literary Meeting

Orono mourns the death of Rachel Diana Miller at 86 after a stroke. Born at Kirby in 1851, she moved to Orono in 1881 and served Park St. United Church as choir leader and Sunday School teacher. She leaves one son, Charles T. Miller, with services held at Park St. United Church and burial in Orono Cemetery.

Miss Adele Morton and Miss Olive Brown Win the Special Shields

The Orono Continuation School held a combined literary and commencement program in its assembly hall on March 1. Miss Adele Morton won the Tyrrell General Proficiency Shield and athletic medals were given to Morton, Powers, Leamen, Forrester, Case, and Scott, with Miss Morton praised for high general proficiency.

Clarke Township Council Holds Quiet Session In Orono

Clarke Township council met in Orono on March 1 1938 to pass bills for town hall upkeep hospital costs reliefs and road maintenance. Reeve T A Reid praised Good Roads Convention remarks on Ontario forestry urging reforestation. Weed inspector R H Wood was reappointed and tax collection authority extended to April 1 1938.
