Liberal Nomination Meeting in Durham Chooses John James

Durham Liberal Association held a nomination meeting at Township Hall Ione to nominate John M James as the Liberal candidate for Durham. Speakers praised past Liberal leadership, and Lester Pearson urged peace through NATO and UN while warning against rapid social security expansion without income growth.

Hydro Expansion In Orono A Topic At Trustees Meeting

The Orono Police Trustees met June 22 at the Hydro office with light discussion. Hydro manager E H Dent reported load growth from 120 kilowatts in 1949 to 224 kilowatts this year, urging planning for longer office hours and potential full-time staff as demand rises. The matter was tabled pending incorporation status. a one-week July holiday was approved.

Federation Picnic Held Amid Rain in Orono Park

Despite an early afternoon downpour, the Durham County Federation of Agriculture picnic and Junior Farmer’s Sports Day occurred at Orono Community Park. About 150 members and children enjoyed a noon picnic, with prizes awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mountjoy for the oldest couple and to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cryderman for the largest family.

Orono School Tops Public Field Meet at Kendal

Under a blazing sun in Kendal at Jackson Memorial Park pupils from eighteen Clarke Township schools contested the Public School Field Meet. Orono School led urban entrants with 51 points, Newcastle scoring 48. Crooked Creek topped rural schools with 26, edging Antioch by one. Two records fell: Paul Rutherford set 14' 8" in the running broad jump and Bob Weatherup of Orono added the softball throw mark before the meeting concluded.

Ground Observer Corps Forms In Orono For Air Defence

The Royal Canadian Air Force designates Orono as a reporting centre for a Ground Observer Corps to defend Canada. Volunteers are sought for training days this summer and permanent wartime operation. women and ex servicemen are urged to join, leave names at the post office soon.

Lang Memorial Chapel Dedicated Sunday at Orono Cemetery

Decoration Day events at Orono Cemetery include the dedication of Lang Memorial Chapel. Dr. R S Dang of Chicago will present the chapel to the Cemetery Board, accepted by H J Louch. Lieut Cole John Leuty will accept the organ on behalf of the Midlands Regiment in memory of WWII fallen. The Orono Band leads a 2:30 p.m. service with a choir and hymn singing.
